মিনেম্যাটা কনভেনশন অন মার্কারি’ Bangladesh becomes party to Minamata Convention on Mercury
New York, 18 April 2023: Today, Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York handed over the Instrument of Ratification of the Minamata Convention on Mercury by the Government of Bangladesh to the United Nations. David Nanopoulos, Chief of Treaty Section received the instrument on behalf of the UN. With that submission, Bangladesh has formally become party to the above Convention.
Recently the Government of Bangladesh has decided to ratify the Convention following a series of consultations held with all relevant stakeholders.
The Minamata Convention on Mercury aims to protect human health and the environment from anthropogenic emissions and releases of mercury and mercury compounds. Through enhancing international cooperation for the reduction of mercury pollution, the Convention saves the environment and the lives of millions of people around the world. Mercury is also in the top 10 of chemicals of major public health concern according to the World Health Organization. By joining the Convention as a party, Bangladesh is reaffirming its strong commitment to the global efforts in reducing mercury pollution to save our mother planet and its habitants.
It may be noted that the Convention was adopted and opened for signature on 10 October 2013 at a diplomatic conference held in Kumamoto, Japan. As of now, 140 countries have become parties to the Convention and by ratifying the treaty, Bangladesh has become the 141st party to the Convention.

নিউইয়র্ক, ১৮ এপ্রিল ২০২৩: আজ জাতিসংঘে নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি ও রাষ্ট্রদূত মোহাম্মদ আবদুল মুহিত বাংলাদেশ সরকারের পক্ষে ‘মিনেম্যাটা কনভেনশন অন মার্কারি’র অনুসমর্থনপত্র জাতিসংঘের কাছে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে হস্তান্তর করেন। জাতিসংঘের পক্ষে এটি গ্রহণ করেন সংস্থাটির ট্রিটি বিভাগের প্রধান ডেভিড ন্যানোপোলোস। এই অনুসমর্থনপত্র দাখিলের মাধ্যমে বাংলাদেশ আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে উপরোক্ত কনভেনশনের পক্ষভুক্ত (State Party) হয়েছে।
‘মিনেম্যাটা কনভেনশন অন মার্কারি’র লক্ষ্য ও উদ্দশ্য হলো মানব স্বাস্থ্য এবং পরিবেশকে পারদ ও পারদযৌগের দূষণ হতে রক্ষা করা। পারদ দূষণ হ্রাসের লক্ষ্যে আন্তর্জাতিক সহযোগিতা বৃদ্ধির মাধ্যমে কনভেনশনটি আমাদের পরিবেশ এবং বিশ্বজুড়ে লক্ষ লক্ষ মানুষের জীবন বাঁচাবে। বিশ্ব স্বাস্থ্য সংস্থার মতে, পারদ জনস্বাস্থ্যের জন্য ক্ষতিকর এমন ১০টি রাসায়নিক পদার্থের মধ্যে অন্যতম। কনভেনশনে পক্ষভুক্ত হওয়ার মাধ্যমে বাংলাদেশ এই পৃথিবী ও মানব জাতিকে পারদ দূষণ হতে বাঁচাতে গৃহীত বৈশ্বিক প্রচেষ্টার প্রতি তার দৃঢ় প্রতিশ্রুতি পুনর্ব্যক্ত করেছে।
উল্লেখ্য, ১০ অক্টোবর ২০১৩ সালে জাপানের কুমামোটোতে অনুষ্ঠিত কূটনৈতিক সম্মেলনে কনভেনশনটি স্বাক্ষরের জন্য সর্বপ্রথম উন্মুক্ত করা হয়েছিল। চুক্তিটি অনুসমর্থনের মাধ্যমে বাংলাদেশসহ ১৪১টি দেশ এই কনভেনশনের পক্ষভুক্ত হলো।
