Observance of Historic 7th March at Bangladesh High Commission, Ottawa
Today, on 07 March 2024, Bangladesh High Commission in Ottawa observed the historic 7th March with due solemnity. A special event highlighting the significance of Bangabandhu’s 7th March speech was organized at the High Commission’s auditorium at 3:00 pm. This event was attended by valiant freedom fighters and members of the Bangladeshi-Canadian Community. The ceremony was presided over by His Excellency the High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Canada, Dr. Khalilur Rahman.
The program commenced with the laying of floral wreaths at the portrait of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by HE the High Commissioner. Subsequently, officers of the High Commission read out messages by the Hon’ble President and the Hon’ble Prime Minister. Following the reading of these messages, the historic speech delivered by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 07 March 1971 at the then Racecourse Ground was broadcast.
During the discussion segment of the program, valiant freedom fighters and other invited guests shed light on the context and significance of Bangabandhu’s historic 7th March speech. They unanimously acknowledged this speech as the embodiment of the spirit of our war of independence, which inspired the Bengali nation to unite against the oppressive regime of West Pakistani military rulers. It was emphasized that Bangabandhu’s speech inspired the Bengali people to prepare for the independence movement. Recognizing its global significance, the speakers noted that Bangabandhu’s 7th March speech has been inscribed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register as a documentary heritage. Speakers extended their gratitude to the Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her efforts in this regard.
In his closing remarks, HE the High Commissioner Dr. Khalilur Rahman paid humble tribute to the Father of the Nation and the 3 million martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War. He highlighted how Bangabandhu’s leadership, as demonstrated in his 7th March speech, guided the nation towards independence. Encouraging everyone to follow the principles outlined in the speech, he underscored the pivotal role it played in inspiring millions of Bengalis to join the fight for independence. He commended the ongoing efforts of the present government, led by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in realizing Bangabandhu’s vision of ‘Sonar Bangla’. Expressing gratitude for the adoption of “Joy Bangla” as the national slogan, he called upon all Bangladeshi-Canadians to contribute towards building a developed and prosperous ‘Smart Bangladesh’ by 2041 under the leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, embodying the spirit of our liberation war.

আজ ০৭ মার্চ ২০২৪ তারিখে যথাযোগ্য মর্যাদায় বাংলাদেশ হাইকমিশন, অটোয়া ঐতিহাসিক ০৭ই মার্চ উদযাপন করে। হাইকমিশনের মিলনায়তনে বেলা ৩.০০ ঘটিকায় দিবসটি উপলক্ষে কানাডায় বসবাসরত বীর মুক্তিযোদ্ধাগণ ও অন্যান্য বাংলাদেশী কানাডিয়ানদের উপস্থিতিতে একটি বিশেষ আলোচনা সভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। অনু্ষ্ঠানটির সভাপতিত্ব করেন কানাডায় নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের মান্যবর হাইকমিশনার ড. খলিলুর রহমান।
অনুষ্ঠানের শুরুতে জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের প্রতিকৃতিতে পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পণ করে শ্রদ্ধা জানানো হয়। অতঃপর দিবসটি উপলক্ষে হাইকমিশনের কর্মকর্তাবৃন্দ ঢাকা থেকে প্রেরিত মহামান্য রাষ্ট্রপতি ও মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রীর বাণী পাঠ করেন। বাণী পাঠের পর জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের ৭ই মার্চের ঐতিহাসিক ভাষণটি সম্প্রচার করা হয়।
অনুষ্ঠানের আলোচনা পর্বে বীর মুক্তিযোদ্ধাগণ ও অন্যান্য আমন্ত্রিত অতিথিবৃন্দ ঐতিহাসিক ০৭ই মার্চের ভাষণের প্রেক্ষাপট ও তাৎপর্যের উপর বিশেষ আলোকপাত করেন। এ ভাষণকে সকলেই স্বাধীনতার মূলমন্ত্র বলে মন্তব্য করেন। তাঁরা আরও বলেন, বঙ্গবন্ধুর ঐতিহাসিক ০৭ই মার্চের ভাষণটি পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানি সামরিক শাসকদের বিরুদ্ধে ঐক্যবদ্ধ হতে বাঙালি জাতিকে অনুপ্রাণিত করেছিল। এ ভাষণটির মাধ্যমে বাঙালি জাতি স্পষ্টভাবে বুঝতে পেরেছিল যে, যুদ্ধের জন্য প্রস্তুতি নিতে হবে। বঙ্গবন্ধুর ঐতিহাসিক ০৭ই মার্চের ভাষণ বর্তমানে ডকুমেন্টারি ঐতিহ্য (Documentary Heritage) হিসেবে ইউনেস্কোর Memory of the World Register-এ অন্তর্ভুক্ত হয়েছে। এই উদ্যোগ সফল করার জন্য বক্তাগণ মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার প্রতি ধন্যবাদ ও কৃতজ্ঞতা প্রকাশ করেন।
সভাপতির বক্তব্যের শুরুতে মান্যবর হাইকমিশনার ড. খলিলুর রহমান জাতির জনক বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানসহ মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধে শাহাদাৎবরণকারী ৩০ লক্ষ বীর শহিদদেরকে বিনম্রচিত্তে স্মরণ করেন। তিনি বলেন, বলিষ্ঠ ও যোগ্য নেতৃত্বের মাধ্যমে বঙ্গবন্ধু একটি জাতিকে কিভাবে স্বাধীনতা এনে দিয়েছেন ০৭ই মার্চের ভাষণ তারই প্রতিফলন বহন করে। তিনি ০৭ই মার্চের ভাষণের দিকনির্দেশনার আলোকে দেশ গড়ার জন্য সকলকে উদ্বুদ্ধ করেন। স্বাধীনতা ও মুক্তি অর্জনের লক্ষ্যে কোটি বাঙালিকে উজ্জীবিত করার ক্ষেত্রে ০৭ই মার্চের কালজয়ী ভাষণের ভূমিকা ছিল অপরিসীম। বঙ্গবন্ধু যে সোনার বাংলা গড়ার স্বপ্নে দেশ স্বাধীন করেছেন তাঁর সুযোগ্য কন্যা বর্তমান মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা সে স্বপ্ন বাস্তবায়নে অক্লান্ত কাজ করে যাচ্ছেন বলে তিনি উল্লেখ করেন। তিনি “জয় বাংলা”-কে জাতীয় স্লোগান করায় বর্তমান সরকারের প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞতা প্রকাশ করেন। তিনি আমাদের মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চেতনা ধারণ করে মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রীর নেতৃত্বে ২০৪১ সালের মধ্যে বাংলাদেশকে একটি উন্নত ও সমৃদ্ধশালী ‘স্মার্ট বাংলাদেশ’-এ পরিণত করতে সকল বাংলাদেশি কানাডিয়ানদের প্রতি আহবান জানান।
