INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY
Dear Friends,
This coming Saturday, February 21, the world will celebrate International Mother
Language Day. During the time I served as a Montreal City Councillor, I promoted
linguistic diversity including celebrating every February 21. In my current role as Director General of United Against Hate Canada, I have continued the work to alert Canadiansto the importance of this day.
At the behest of Bangladesh and a group of Bangladeshi Canadians who lobbied for it, UNESCO in 1998 recognized International Mother Language Day as a significant part of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage stating that the day’s goal is to foster tolerance and promote the preservation and protection of all languages.
UNESCO urged governments and local administration to support International Mother Language Day as a way to foster respect for linguistic and cultural diversity and to cherish multilingualism. That objective also has been enshrined by two United Nations General Assembly resolutions.
The day is particularly important to persons of Bangladeshi origin and heritage
as it reminds us of all of the struggle for the recognition of the Bengali language when what is now Bangladesh was part of Pakistan. Over 60% of the then country population spoke Bengali which was not granted official recognition. Student demonstrations were met by violence on February 21, 1952, and many were killed.
This tragedy was one of the causes that ultimately gave birth to Bangladesh as a nation in 1971. The day is a holiday in Bangladesh and respect for linguistic pluralism is a founding principle of the country.
It is also a value all of us should support. The diverse languages large and small are part of shape human culture. Language is a fundamental part of how humans definethemselves and every language contributes to our unique experiences as cultures.
The Borough of Côte-des-Neiges – Notre-Dame-de-Grâce in which I served
as a Councillor first recognized International Mother Language Day in 2011 and on February 2, 2021, the 10th anniversary, of the original motion, reaffirmed its support for the principles of linguistic diversity and the values or tolerance and cooperation that underpin multilingualism.
These are values that United Against Hate Canada believes will help build a better Canada and a more harmonious and peaceful world.
I have attached that 2021 motion as we now mark five years since its ratification.

আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস উপলক্ষে
প্রিয় বন্ধুরা,
আগামী শনিবার, ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারি, বিশ্বজুড়ে পালিত হবে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস। আমি যখন Montreal সিটি কাউন্সিলর হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেছি, তখন প্রতি বছর ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারি উদযাপনের মাধ্যমে ভাষাগত বৈচিত্র্যকে উৎসাহিত করেছি। বর্তমানে ইউনাইটেড এগেইনস্ট হেইট কানাডার ডিরেক্টর জেনারেল হিসেবে আমি এই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দিনের তাৎপর্য সম্পর্কে কানাডিয়ানদের সচেতন করার কাজ অব্যাহত রেখেছি।
Bangladesh এবং একদল বাংলাদেশি কানাডিয়ানের উদ্যোগ ও প্রচেষ্টায়, ১৯৯৮ সালে UNESCO আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসকে মানবজাতির অমূর্ত সাংস্কৃতিক ঐতিহ্যের একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি দেয়। ইউনেস্কো ঘোষণা করে যে এই দিনের লক্ষ্য হলো সহনশীলতা বৃদ্ধি করা এবং বিশ্বের সব ভাষার সংরক্ষণ ও সুরক্ষা নিশ্চিত করা।
ইউনেস্কো সরকার ও স্থানীয় প্রশাসনকে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসকে সমর্থন করার আহ্বান জানায়, যাতে ভাষাগত ও সাংস্কৃতিক বৈচিত্র্যের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা বৃদ্ধি পায় এবং বহুভাষিকতাকে লালন করা যায়। এই লক্ষ্য জাতিসংঘের সাধারণ পরিষদের দুটি প্রস্তাবেও অন্তর্ভুক্ত হয়েছে, যা United Nations General Assembly দ্বারা গৃহীত।
এই দিনটি বিশেষভাবে বাংলাদেশি বংশোদ্ভূত মানুষের জন্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, কারণ এটি আমাদের স্মরণ করিয়ে দেয় বাংলা ভাষার স্বীকৃতির জন্য সংগ্রামের ইতিহাস। যখন বর্তমান বাংলাদেশ Pakistan এর অংশ ছিল, তখন দেশের ৬০ শতাংশের বেশি মানুষ বাংলা ভাষায় কথা বললেও সেটি রাষ্ট্রভাষার স্বীকৃতি পায়নি। ১৯৫২ সালের ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারি ছাত্রদের আন্দোলনের ওপর সহিংস দমন-পীড়ন চালানো হয় এবং অনেকেই শহীদ হন।
এই মর্মান্তিক ঘটনা পরবর্তীতে ১৯৭১ সালে বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতার পথ প্রশস্ত করার অন্যতম কারণ হয়ে ওঠে। বাংলাদেশে ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারি একটি জাতীয় ছুটির দিন এবং ভাষাগত বহুত্ববাদ দেশের প্রতিষ্ঠাকালীন মূল নীতিগুলোর একটি।
ভাষাগত বৈচিত্র্য মানব সংস্কৃতিকে গড়ে তোলার একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ উপাদান। ভাষা মানুষের পরিচয়ের মৌলিক অংশ এবং প্রতিটি ভাষা আমাদের সাংস্কৃতিক অভিজ্ঞতাকে সমৃদ্ধ করে।
আমি যে Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce বরোতে কাউন্সিলর হিসেবে কাজ করেছি, সেখানে ২০১১ সালে প্রথম আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসকে স্বীকৃতি দেওয়া হয়। পরে ২ ফেব্রুয়ারি ২০২১ সালে, মূল প্রস্তাবের ১০ম বার্ষিকীতে, ভাষাগত বৈচিত্র্য, সহনশীলতা এবং সহযোগিতার মূল্যবোধের প্রতি পুনরায় সমর্থন জানানো হয়।
এই মূল্যবোধগুলোই ইউনাইটেড এগেইনস্ট হেইট কানাডার বিশ্বাস—যা একটি উন্নত কানাডা এবং আরও শান্তিপূর্ণ ও সম্প্রীতিপূর্ণ বিশ্ব গড়তে সহায়তা করবে।
আমরা এখন সেই প্রস্তাব অনুমোদনের পাঁচ বছর পূর্তি উপলক্ষে স্মরণ করছি, এবং আমি ২০২১ সালের সেই প্রস্তাবটি সংযুক্ত করেছি।
আসুন, আমরা সবাই মিলে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস এবং এর প্রতিনিধিত্ব করা উদারতা, সহনশীলতা ও সহযোগিতার চেতনাকে উদযাপন করি।
