11th November is observed as Remembrance Day in many countries like Canada, United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland etc. with due solemnity. Remembrance Day commemorates the glorious sacrifices of soldiers in battles or wars e.g. First World War, 2nd World War, Korean war, Afghanistan conflicts, peace keeping missions etc.. 11th November is called Veterans Day in the United States which is a national holiday.
In United Kingdom. it is called Armistice Day. This important day ” Remembrance Day” on 11th November is observed with moment of silence, parade, gun salute and laying wreaths at Memorial Sites. We pay our glowing tribute with respect and love to those brave soldiers who sacrificed their valuable lives in order to safeguard humanity, freedom, peace and democracy. Remembrance Day is first observed on 11 November in most countries to recall the end of hostilities of First World War on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month”, in accordance with the Armistice signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente. The First World War officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919. The federal department of Veteran Affairs Canada states that the date is of “remembrance for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace”; particularly the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War and all conflicts since then in which members of the Canadian Armed Forces have participated. The department runs a program called Canada Remembers with the mission of helping young and new Canadians, most of whom have never known war, “come to understand and appreciate what those who have served Canada in times of war, armed conflict and peace stand for and what they have sacrificed for their country.”
This year most Remembrance Day parades and activities have been cancelled because of COVID-19 Pandemic, and the annual Remembrance Day ceremony in Ottawa — where roughly 30,000 Canadians congregated in past years — at the National War Memorial will still take place, but it is not open to the public. The Royal Canadian Legion is explicitly discouraging Canadians from attending Remembrance Day ceremonies in person this year because of COVID-19 pandemic and instead asking people to watch on TV or online. This year of 2020, there was also a special emphasis on the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War after many commemorations planned for earlier this year in Europe and elsewhere were cancelled because of COVID-19 pandemic. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau arrived at the National War Memorial with his wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau in Ottawa. Both wore masks, as did others in attendance. Other participants at the remembrance ceremony included Gov. Gen. Julie Payette and Debbie Sullivan, this year’s Silver Cross Mother.
