“Lest We Forget” reverberates in Canada on the occasion of the Genocide Day
Ottawa 25 March 2025, The martyrs of March 25, 1971 were remembered with due solemnity in Canada on the occasion of the Genocide Day.
The High Commission of Bangladesh in Canada solemnly observed the Genocide Day, commemorating the barbaric crackdown carried out under ‘Operation Searchlight’ by the Pakistani invading forces across Bangladesh on the night of March 25, 1971.
A candle-lighting ceremony honoured the countless martyrs who lost their lives on the night of March 25 and during the ensuing nine-month War of Independence in 1971, and during the 2024 July Uprising. One-minute silence was also observed in memory of the martyrs. The message of Hon’ble Chief Adviser issued on the occasion of the Genocide Day was read out. A commemorative discussion session was held, where High Commissioner Nahida Sobhan delivered a speech on the significance of the Day. The High Commissioner emphasized the need for global recognition of the 1971 Bangladesh genocide. She also reflected on the massacre during the 2024 July Uprising in Bangladesh, depicting the uprising as a continuation of the nation’s enduring struggle for dignity, emancipation and the rights of the people.
The program concluded with a special prayer for the departed souls of all martyrs of Bangladesh’s War of Independence and 2024 July Uprising and for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of the country and its people.
