Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC observes “Genocide Day” ‘গণহত্যা দিবস ’

Washington DC, 25th March, 2023 -The Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC observed the “Genocide Day” today (Saturday) commemorating one of the most brutal genocides in world history that was committed by the Pakistan army on 25th March in 1971 in Bangladesh.
The Embassy organized elaborate programs to pay deep homage to the martyrs who were killed mercilessly by the Pakistani military junta’s operation code named “Operation Searchlight” on the black night of 25th March in that year.
The day’s programmes began with observance of one-minute silence to pay profound respect to the martyrs of the War of Liberation. This was followed by screening of a documentary on the brutalities of the Pakistani army in Bangladesh in 1971.
The messages issued by Hon’ble President Md. Abdul Hamid and Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina were read out by Minister (Commerce) Md Salim Reza and Minister (Political) Md Rasheduzzaman.
Taking part in the discussion, Bangladesh Ambassador to the USA Muhammad Imran paid rich tributes to the greatest Bangalee of all time, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and three million martyrs of the Liberation War.
Recalling the Pakistani army’s atrocities in the War of Liberation War, he said the Pakistan army launched the infamous “Operation Searchlight” in Dhaka on the night of March 25 in 1971 as part of their blueprint to thwart the Awami League’s assumption of office following its victory in the elections held in 1970.
He described the March 25 massacre as the worst genocide in human history and mentioned that the systematic mass killing and atrocities perpetrated by the Pakistani junta on the unarmed Bangalees on that day left thousands of people dead and a trail of destruction which continued till December 1971.
Ambassador Imran said Bangabandhu formally proclaimed the independence of Bangladesh at the first hour of the 26th March 1971 after the Pakistan army’s barbaric attack. Under Bangabandhu’s undisputed leadership, Bangladesh achieved ultimate victory on December 16 in 1971 after the nine-month bloody war against Pakistan, he said.
The Ambassador called upon all to work unitedly to build “Sonar Bangla” (Golden Bengal) as dreamt by Bangabandhu and join the journey of establishing a “Smart Bangladesh” by 2041 under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina being imbued with the spirit of the Liberation War.
Minister (Economic) Md. Mahadee Hasan also took part in the discussion and urged all to highlight the issue of Pakistani army’s brutality on 25th March before the world community to get the international recognition of the genocide.
The programs ended with offering a special prayer seeking divine blessings for eternal peace of the departed souls of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyrs of the War of Liberation. First Secretary (Visa & Passport Wing) Muhammad Abdul Hye Milton conducted the programs.

ওয়াশিংটনে বাংলাদেশ দূতাবাসে ‘গণহত্যা দিবস’ পালিত

ওয়াশিংটন ডিসি, ২৫ মার্চ, ২০২৩ -১৯৭১ সালের ২৫ মার্চ বাংলাদেশে নিরস্ত্র মানুষের ওপর পাকিস্তান সেনাবাহিনী কর্তৃক সংঘটিত ইতিহাসের অন্যতম বর্বরোচিত গণহত্যাকে স্মরণ করে আজ (শনিবার) ওয়াশিংটন ডিসিতে অবস্থিত বাংলাদেশ দূতাবাসে যথাযোগ্য মর্যাদায় “গণহত্যা দিবস” পালিত হয়েছে ।

ঐদিনে পাকিস্তান সামরিক জান্তার কুখ্যাত অভিযান “অপারেশন সার্চলাইট”-এ নিহত সকল শহিদের প্রতি গভীর শ্রদ্ধা জানাতে দূতাবাস এক কর্মসূচির আয়োজন করে।

মুক্তিযুদ্ধে সকল শহিদের প্রতি গভীর শ্রদ্ধা জানিয়ে এক মিনিট নীরবতা পালনের মধ্য দিয়ে সকালে দিনের কর্মসূচি শুরু হয়। এরপর ১৯৭১ সালে বাংলাদেশের মুক্তিযুদ্ধে পাকিস্তান হানাদার বাহিনীর গণহত্যা ও নৃশংসতার ওপর একটি তথ্যচিত্র প্রদর্শন করা হয়।

পরে মহামান্য রাষ্ট্রপতি মোঃ আবদুল হামিদ ও মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা প্রদত্ত বাণী পাঠ করে শোনান মিনিস্টার (কমার্স) মোঃ সেলিম রেজা এবং মিনিস্টার (পলিটিক্যাল) মোঃ রাশেদুজ্জামান।

আলোচনায় অংশ নিয়ে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রদূত মোহাম্মদ ইমরান সর্বকালের সর্বশ্রেষ্ঠ বাঙালি, জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান এবং মুক্তিযুদ্ধে ত্রিশ লাখ শহিদের মহান আত্মত্যাগ গভীর শ্রদ্ধার সাথে স্মরণ করেন।

মুক্তিযুদ্ধে পাকিস্তানি সেনাবাহিনীর বর্বরতার কথা স্মরণ করে তিনি বলেন, পাকিস্তান সেনাবাহিনী ১৯৭১ সালের ২৫ মার্চ রাতে ঢাকায় কুখ্যাত ‘অপারেশন সার্চলাইট’ শুরু করে।

তিনি ২৫ মার্চের গণহত্যাকে মানব ইতিহাসের সবচেয়ে জঘন্যতম গণহত্যা হিসেবে বর্ণনা করেন এবং উল্লেখ করেন যে, সেদিন নিরস্ত্র বাঙালিদের ওপর পাকিস্তানি জান্তার পরিকল্পিত গণহত্যায় হাজার হাজার মানুষ প্রাণ হারান এবং ব্যাপক ধ্বংসলীলা সংঘটিত হয়।
রাষ্ট্রদূত ইমরান বলেন, পাকিস্তান সেনাবাহিনীর বর্বরোচিত হামলার পর ১৯৭১ সালের ২৬ মার্চ প্রথম প্রহরে জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা ঘোষণা করেন। তিনি বলেন বঙ্গবন্ধুর অবিসংবাদিত নেতৃত্বে বাংলাদেশ পাকিস্তানের বিরুদ্ধে নয় মাসের রক্তক্ষয়ী যুদ্ধের পর ১৬ ডিসেম্বর চূড়ান্ত বিজয় অর্জন করে।

রাষ্ট্রদূত মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার নেতৃত্বে মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চেতনা ও বঙ্গবন্ধুর আদর্শে অনুপ্রাণিত হয়ে সমৃদ্ধ ও উন্নত বাংলাদেশ বিনির্মানের পাশাপাশি ২০৪১ সালের মধ্যে প্রধানমন্ত্রী ঘোষিত ‘স্মার্ট বাংলাদেশ’ প্রতিষ্ঠার যাত্রায় যোগ দেওয়ার জন্য সকলের প্রতি আহ্বান জানান।

মিনিস্টার (ইকোনমিক) মোঃ মেহেদী হাসানও আলোচনায় অংশ নেন এবং ১৯৭১ সালের ২৫ মার্চ বাংলাদেশে সংঘটিত গণহত্যার আন্তর্জাতিক স্বীকৃতি আদায়ের লক্ষ্যে ঐদিনে নিরস্ত্র বাঙালিদের উপর পাকিস্তান সেনাবাহিনীর নৃশংসতার বিষয়টি বিশ্ব সম্প্রদায়ের  সামনে তুলে ধরার জন্য সকলের প্রতি আহবান জানান ।

জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান ও মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সকল শহিদের বিদেহী আত্মার মাগফেরাত কামনা করে এক বিশেষ মোনাজাতের মাধ্যমে দিনের কর্মসূচী শেষ হয়। কর্মসূচী পরিচালনা করেন ফার্স্ট সেক্রেটারি (পাসপোর্ট ও ভিসা উইং) মুহাম্মদ আব্দুল হাই মিল্টন।
