‘Sheikh Russel Day’ observed in Washington DC ওয়াশিংটন ডিসিতে ‘শেখ রাসেল দিবস’ পালিত
Washington, DC, 18 October 2022 – The Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC on Tuesday (18 October) observed the “Sheikh Russel Day”, marking the 59th birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s youngest son Shaheed Sheikh Russel in a befitting manner.
The Embassy arranged different programmes in memory of Sheikh Russel at the Bangabandhu Auditorium in the afternoon.
Sheikh Russel, also the youngest brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi Road No. 32 in the capital.
But he was brutally assassinated along with most of his family members, including his father Bangabandhu, on August 15, 1975 when he was a student of class four at University Laboratory School.
The programmes of the Embassy included discussion meeting on the life of Shaheed Sheikh Russel, reading out messages of President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, placing of floral wreaths at the portrait of Sheikh Russel and organising a painting competition for the children and juveniles.
The programmes began with laying of floral wreaths at the portrait of Shaheed Sheikh Russel by Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States Muhammad Imran. Officials and employees of the Embassy were present at that time.
Then, messages from the Hon’ble President and the Hon’ble Prime Minister on this occasion were read out by Defence Attaché Brig Gen Md Shahedul Islam and Minister (Press) AZM Sajjad Hossain respectively.
Taking part in the discussion, Ambassador Imran highlighted Shaheed Sheikh Russel’s unique virtues which he demonstrated in his only 10-year life.
He said Sheikh Russel was a decent human being and he used to help people passionately. In spite of being a young boy, Shaheed Sheikh Russel had great love in his heart for general people, Ambassador Imran continued.
The Ambassador also paid deepest homage to the Father of the Nation and other members of his family who were brutally assassinated in the 15 August 1975 carnage. He called upon the new generations to build themselves as good citizens of the nation and work for establishing a developed and prosperous Bangladesh being imbued with the ideology of Bangabandhu
The programmes ended with distribution of prizes by the Ambassador among the winners of the painting competition.
Earlier, a documentary on the life of Shaheed Sheikh Russel was screened and a cake was cut at the event. A special prayer was offered, seeking eternal peace for the departed soul of Shaheed Sheikh Russel and others martyred on the fateful night of 15 August 1975. Counsellor Mohammad Moniruzzaman conducted the programmes. Apart from officials and employees of the Mission, their family members were also present at the function.

ওয়াশিংটন, ডিসি, 18 অক্টোবর 2022 – জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের কনিষ্ঠ পুত্র শহীদ শেখ রাসেলের ৫৯তম জন্মদিন উপলক্ষে মঙ্গলবার (১৮ অক্টোবর) ওয়াশিংটন ডিসিতে বাংলাদেশ দূতাবাসে যথাযোগ্য মর্যাদায় ‘শেখ রাসেল দিবস’ পালন করা হয়।
এ উপলক্ষে বিকেলে বঙ্গবন্ধু মিলনায়তনে শেখ রাসেলের স্মরণে দূতাবাস বিভিন্ন কর্মসূচির আয়োজন করে।
মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার ছোট ভাই শেখ রাসেল ১৯৬৪ সালের ১৮ অক্টোবর রাজধানীর ধানমন্ডি ৩২ নম্বর রোডের ঐতিহাসিক বঙ্গবন্ধু ভবনে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। ১৯৭৫ সালের ১৫ আগস্ট ইউনিভার্সিটি ল্যাবরেটরি স্কুলের চতুর্থ শ্রেণির ছাত্র থাকাকালীন ঘাতকেরা বঙ্গবন্ধু ও তার পরিবারের অধিকাংশ সদস্যসহ তাকে নির্মমভাবে হত্যা করে।
‘শেখ রাসেল দিবস’ উপলক্ষে দূতাবাসের কর্মসূচির মধ্যে ছিল শহীদ শেখ রাসেলের জীবনী নিয়ে আলোচনা সভা, রাষ্ট্রপতি মোঃ আবদুল হামিদ ও প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা প্রদত্ত বাণী পাঠ, শেখ রাসেলের প্রতিকৃতিতে পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পণ এবং শিশু-কিশোরদের জন্য চিত্রাঙ্কন প্রতিযোগিতা।
যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রদূত মোহাম্মদ ইমরান এবং দূতাবাসের কর্মকর্তা ও কর্মচারীবৃন্দ শহীদ শেখ রাসেলের প্রতিকৃতিতে পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পণ করে তার প্রতি গভীর শ্রদ্ধা জানান।
এই উপলক্ষে মহামান্য রাষ্ট্রপতি ও মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রীর বাণী পাঠ করেন যথাক্রমে ডিফেন্স অ্যাটাচে ব্রিগেডিয়ার জেনারেল মোঃ শাহেদুল ইসলাম এবং মিনিস্টার (প্রেস) এজেডএম সাজ্জাদ হোসেন।
আলোচনায় অংশ নিয়ে রাষ্ট্রদূত ইমরান শহীদ শেখ রাসেলের অনন্য মানবিক গুণাবলী তুলে ধরেন যার স্বাক্ষর তিনি তার মাত্র ১০ বছরের জীবনে রেখেছিলেন। তিনি বলেন, ছোট শেখ রাসেল অত্যন্ত আন্তরিকতার সাথে মানুষকে সাহায্য করতেন ও সাধারণ মানুষের জন্য তার হৃদয়ে ছিল অগাধ ভালোবাসা।
রাষ্ট্রদূত 1975 সালের 15 আগস্টের হত্যাযজ্ঞে নির্মমভাবে নিহত জাতির পিতা এবং তার পরিবারের অন্যান্য সদস্যদের প্রতি গভীর শ্রদ্ধা নিবেদন করেন। তিনি নতুন প্রজন্মকে বঙ্গবন্ধুর আদর্শে অনুপ্রাণিত হয়ে নিজেদেরকে জাতির সুনাগরিক হিসেবে গড়ে তুলতে এবং একটি উন্নত ও সমৃদ্ধ বাংলাদেশ প্রতিষ্ঠায় কাজ করার আহ্বান জানান।
চিত্রাঙ্কন প্রতিযোগিতায় বিজয়ীদের মাঝে রাষ্ট্রদূত কর্তৃক পুরস্কার বিতরণের মাধ্যমে অনুষ্ঠানের সমাপ্তি ঘটে।
এর আগে শহীদ শেখ রাসেলের জীবনের ওপর নির্মিত প্রামাণ্যচিত্র প্রদর্শন ও কেক কাটা হয়। ১৯৭৫ সালের ১৫ আগস্ট রাতে শহীদ শেখ রাসেল ও অন্যান্য শহীদদের বিদেহী আত্মার মাগফেরাত কামনা করে বিশেষ মোনাজাত করা হয়।
অনুষ্ঠানটি সঞ্চালনা করেন কনস্যুলার (পলিটিক্যাল-1) মোহাম্মদ মনিরুজ্জামান । অনুষ্ঠানে মিশনের কর্মকর্তা-কর্মচারী ছাড়াও তাদের পরিবারের সদস্যরা উপস্থিত ছিলেন।
