Armed Forces Day celebrated in Bangladesh Embassy in Washington:  Bangladesh Armed Forces in forefront of bringing world peace, stability, says US Army’s Deputy Chief

Washington DC, 22 November, 2023- The Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC hosted a reception on Tuesday (21 November) to celebrate the 52nd Armed Forces Day.
Deputy Chief of Staff of US Army Lieutenant General Patrick Matlock addressed the function as the Chief Guest held at the Bangabandhu Auditorium of the Embassy in the evening.
Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States Mr. Muhammad Imran and Defence Attaché of the Embassy Brigadier General Md Shahedul Islam spoke at the event.
Lieutenant General Gerry Glavy, Deputy Commandant of US Marine Corps, Ms Afreen Akhter, US Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, Lieutenant Colonel Seamas Whitsel, Director for South Asia Regional Affairs of US National Security Council, joined the reception, among others.
Alternate Executive Director of the World Bank Dr. Ahmad Kaikaus was also present at the function.
Lieutenant General Patrick Matlock, in his speech, highly praised the Bangladesh Armed Forces for their contribution to safeguarding national independence and establishing world peace.
He said the Bangladesh Armed Forces have been in the forefront of security and national independence, providing relief to fellow citizens in times of natural disasters, sheltering the destitute and bringing peace and stability around the globe.
Noting that Bangladesh is the world’s largest troops’ contributors to the United Nations Peacekeeping Operation, Patrick Matlock said the world is grateful for the sacrifice in the contribution of the Bangladeshi troops.
He pointed out partnership of the Armed Forces between Bangladesh and the USA, and welcomed the continued expansion of this partnership for peace and prosperity in the years to come.
Ambassador Imran paid deepest homage to the architect of Bangladesh, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who led the nation to achieve its long-cherished independence. He also recalled with profound respect three million martyrs, including the members of the armed forces, for their great sacrifice in the War of Liberation.
He mentioned the multifaceted collaboration between the armed forces of Bangladesh and the United States, saying that two countries share the convergent views on a range of defense and security issues.
The Ambassador said as a development partner and friend, the USA has extended support to Bangladesh in the past in its development journey, and Bangladesh looks forward to working together closely with further engagements to take the relations to new heights.
Defence Attaché of Bangladesh Embassy Brigadier General Md Shahedul Islam welcomed the guests at the reception and thanked the USA for the support and cooperation extended that is mutually beneficial for the two countries. Minister (Political) Md. Rashedujjaman conducted the program.
The function began with the playing of the national anthems of Bangladesh and the USA. Then a short documentary on the activities of the Bangladesh Armed Forces was screened.
Ambassadors, diplomats and defence attaches from a number of countries, senior officials from the Pentagon, Department of State, and other US organizations, members of Bangladeshi diaspora and Embassy officials and employees attended the function.
The program ended with cutting of a cake by the chief guest in presence of other dignitaries.

ওয়াশিংটন ডিসি, 22 নভেম্বর, 2023-৫২তম সশস্ত্র বাহিনী দিবস উদযাপন উপলক্ষে ওয়াশিংটন ডিসিস্থ বাংলাদেশ দূতাবাসে গতকাল মঙ্গলবার (২১ নভেম্বর) এক সংবর্ধনার আয়োজন করা হয়।
সন্ধ্যায় দূতাবাসের বঙ্গবন্ধু মিলনায়তনে আয়োজিত অনুষ্ঠানে প্রধান অতিথি হিসেবে বক্তব্য রাখেন মার্কিন সেনাবাহিনীর ডেপুটি চিফ অব স্টাফ লেফটেন্যান্ট জেনারেল প্যাট্রিক ম্যাটলক (Patrick Matlock)। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রদূত মোহাম্মদ ইমরান ও বাংলাদেশ দূতাবাসের ডিফেন্স অ্যাটাচে ব্রিগেডিয়ার জেনারেল মোঃ শাহেদুল ইসলামও অনুষ্ঠানে বক্তব্য রাখেন।
ইউএস মেরিন কোরের ডেপুটি কমান্ড্যান্ট লেফটেন্যান্ট জেনারেল গেরি গ্ল্যাভি (Gerry Glavy), যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের দক্ষিণ ও মধ্য এশিয়া বিষয়ক ডেপুটি অ্যাসিস্ট্যান্ট সেক্রেটারি মিজ আফরিন আক্তার এবং মার্কিন জাতীয় নিরাপত্তা কাউন্সিলের দক্ষিণ এশিয়া বিষয়ক আঞ্চলিক পরিচালক লেফটেন্যান্ট কর্নেল সিমাস হুইটসেলও (Seamas Whitsel) অভ্যর্থনা অনুষ্ঠানে যোগ দেন।
বিশ্ব ব্যাংকের বিকল্প নির্বাহী পরিচালক ড. আহমাদ কায়কাউসও অনুষ্ঠানে উপস্থিত ছিলেন।
লেফটেন্যান্ট জেনারেল প্যাট্রিক ম্যাটলক তার বক্তৃতায় জাতীয় স্বাধীনতা রক্ষা এবং বিশ্ব শান্তি প্রতিষ্ঠায় বাংলাদেশ সশস্ত্র বাহিনীর অবদানের ভূয়সী প্রশংসা করেন।
তিনি বলেন বাংলাদেশ সশস্ত্র বাহিনী নিরাপত্তা ও জাতীয় স্বাধীনতা রক্ষায় এবং প্রাকৃতিক দুর্যোগের সময়ে জনগণের মধ্যে ত্রাণ সহায়তা ও নিঃস্বদের আশ্রয় প্রদান এবং বিশ্বব্যাপী শান্তি ও স্থিতিশীলতা আনয়নে সম্মুখ ভূমিকা পালন করছে।
জাতিসংঘ শান্তিরক্ষা অভিযানে বাংলাদেশকে বিশ্বের বৃহত্তম সৈন্য প্রেরণকারী দেশ হিসেবে উল্লেখ করে প্যাট্রিক ম্যাটলক বলেন, বাংলাদেশি সেনাদের এই অবদানে বিশ্ব আজ কৃতজ্ঞ।
তিনি বাংলাদেশ ও যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সশস্ত্র বাহিনীর মধ্যে বর্তমান অংশীদারিত্বের কথা উল্লেখ করেন এবং আশা প্রকাশ করেন আগামী বছরগুলোতে শান্তি ও সমৃদ্ধির জন্য এই অংশীদারিত্ব আরো মজবুত হবে।
রাষ্ট্রদূত ইমরান বাংলাদেশের স্থপতি জাতির জনক বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের প্রতি গভীর শ্রদ্ধা নিবেদন করেন, যার অবিসংবাদিত নেতৃত্বে বাঙালি জাতি তার দীর্ঘদিনের কাঙ্খিত স্বাধীনতা অর্জন করে। মুক্তিযুদ্ধে মহান আত্মত্যাগের জন্য তিনি সশস্ত্র বাহিনীর বীর সদস্যসহ ত্রিশ লাখ শহিদের প্রতিও গভীর শ্রদ্ধা জানান।
তিনি বাংলাদেশ ও যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সশস্ত্র বাহিনীর মধ্যে বহুমুখী সহযোগিতার কথা উল্লেখ করে বলেন দুই দেশ বিভিন্ন প্রতিরক্ষা ও নিরাপত্তা ইস্যুতে অভিন্ন মতামত বিনিময় করছে।রাষ্ট্রদূত ইমরান বলেন বন্ধু রাষ্ট্র হিসেবে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র অতীতে বাংলাদেশের উন্নয়নের অভিযাত্রায় সব ধরনের সহায়তা প্রদান করেছে এবং বাংলাদেশ এ সম্পর্ককে নতুন উচ্চতায় নিয়ে যাওয়ার জন্য আরো ঘনিষ্ঠভাবে কাজ করার জন্য আগ্রহী ।

ডিফেন্স অ্যাটাচে ব্রিগেডিয়ার জেনারেল মোঃ শাহেদুল ইসলাম সংবর্ধনা অনুষ্ঠানে অতিথিদের স্বাগত জানান এবং দুই দেশের দ্বিপাক্ষিক সম্পর্ক আরো উন্নয়নে অব্যাহত সমর্থন ও সহযোগিতার জন্য যুক্তরাষ্ট্রকে ধন্যবাদ জানান। অনুষ্ঠান পরিচালনা করেন মিনিস্টার (পলিটিক্যাল) মোঃ রাশেদুজ্জামান।
এর আগে বাংলাদেশ ও যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের জাতীয় সঙ্গীত পরিবেশনের মাধ্যমে অনুষ্ঠান শুরু হয়। পরে বাংলাদেশ সশস্ত্র বাহিনীর বিভিন্ন কার্যক্রমের ওপর একটি সংক্ষিপ্ত তথ্যচিত্র প্রদর্শন করা হয়।
বিভিন্ন দেশের রাষ্ট্রদূত, কূটনীতিক ও ডিফেন্স অ্যাটাচে এবং পেন্টাগন, স্টেট ডিপার্টমেন্ট ও অন্যান্য মার্কিন সংস্থার ঊর্ধ্বতন কর্মকর্তাবৃন্দ, প্রবাসী বাংলাদেশি এবং দূতাবাসের কর্মকর্তা ও কর্মচারীবৃন্দ অনুষ্ঠানে উপস্থিত ছিলেন।
সংবর্ধনায় আমন্ত্রিত বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তিবর্গের উপস্থিতিতে প্রধান অতিথি কর্তৃক কেক কাটার মাধ্যমে অনুষ্ঠানের সমাপ্তি ঘটে।
