Ambassador Muhith elected as the President of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS
Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith, the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations has been elected as the President of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS for 2024, at the elections held at United Nations Headquarters, today. The member states also elected the Ambassadors of Colombia, Germany, Romania and Ethiopia as Vice-Presidents of the Executive Board.
With this election, Bangladesh takes up the Presidency of the Executive Board of these three very important agencies of the United Nations. As the President of the Board, Bangladesh will be able to contribute further to the work of the UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS, who have specific mandates to support the countries achieve the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. Bangladesh will also be able to work closely with the other board members and the leaderships of these three vital UN Agencies and provide them with strategic guidance.
In his inaugural statement, Ambassador Muhith thanked the members of the Executive Board for electing him as the President. He also expressed his appreciations to UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS for their remarkable contributions in empowering people around the world and advancing their development aspirations.
“In the context of the difficult challenges that the development agenda of the United Nations suffer due to the pandemic and ongoing humanitarian and climate crises, UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS need to prepare themselves to deliver better, based on new and reinvigorated multilateral commitments and through coordinate efforts and engagement with all stakeholders. And the Executive Board will remain ready to provide those agencies with necessary direction and resources so that they can continue to be at the forefront of all such efforts,” he added.
The election of Ambassador Muhith as the President of the Board comes as a demonstration of the trust and confidence that Bangladesh enjoys in the UN as well as recognition of Bangladesh’s unique success in achieving sustainable development through innovative means under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Since joining this Mission as the Permanent Representative in July 2022, Ambassador Muhith has served as the Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission, the President of the Executive Board of UN-Women and the Vice-President of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS.
জাতিসংঘের তিন সংস্থার নির্বাহি বোর্ডের সভাপতি নির্বাচিত হলেন রাষ্ট্রদূত মুহিত
নিউইয়র্ক, ১০ জানুয়ারি ২০২৩: নতুন বছরে বাংলাদেশের সফল বহুপাক্ষিক কূটনীতির পাল্লায় যুক্ত হলো আরেকটি গৌরবময় অর্জন। জাতিসংঘে নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি রাষ্ট্রদূত মোহাম্মদ আব্দুল মুহিত সর্বসম্মতিক্রমে ২০২৪ সালের জন্য জাতিসংঘ উন্নয়ন কর্মসূচি (ইউএনডিপি)/জাতিসংঘ জনসংখ্যা তহবিল (ইউএনএফপিএ)/জাতিসংঘ প্রকল্প সেবাসমূহের কার্যালয় (ইউএনওপিএস) এর নির্বাহি বোর্ডের সভাপতি নির্বাচিত হয়েছেন। আজ জাতিসংঘ সদর দপ্তরে এই নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। আর এতে কলম্বিয়া, জার্মানি, রোমানিয়া এবং ইথিওপিয়ার রাষ্ট্রদূতগণ সহ-সভাপতি নির্বাচিত হয়েছেন।
২০৩০ উন্নয়ন এজেন্ডা বাস্তবায়নে এই তিনটি সংস্থার সুনির্দিষ্ট ম্যান্ডেট রয়েছে। ইউএনডিপি মূলত দারিদ্র্য বিমোচন ও টেকসই উন্নয়নে সদস্য দেশগুলোকে সহায়তা করে থাকে। ইউএনএফপিএ কাজ করে জনসংখ্যা ও পরিবার পরিকল্পনা বিষয়ে। আর শান্তি, উন্নয়ন ও মানবিক বিষয়াবলীর প্রকল্প সংক্রান্ত চূড়ান্ত কাজগুলো সম্পাদন করে ইউএনওপিএস। সভাপতি হিসেবে বাংলাদেশ সংস্থাগুলোর এই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ম্যান্ডেট বাস্তবায়নে উল্লেখযোগ্য অবদান রাখার সুযোগ পাবে। পাশাপাশি বাংলাদেশ বোর্ডের অন্যান্য সদস্য এবং এই তিনটি সংস্থার নেতৃত্বের সাথে ঘনিষ্ঠভাবে কাজ করার সুযোগ পাবে। বিশ্বব্যাপী তাদের কার্যক্রমে কৌশলগত দিকনির্দেশনা প্রদান করতে পারবে।
স্বাগত বক্তব্যে রাষ্ট্রদূত মুহিত তাকে সভাপতি হিসেবে নির্বাচিত করার জন্য নির্বাহী বোর্ডের সদস্যদেরকে অশেষ ধন্যবাদ জ্ঞাপন করেন। তিনি বিশ্বব্যাপী জনগণের ক্ষমতায়নে এবং তাদের উন্নয়নের আকাঙ্খাকে এগিয়ে নেওয়ার ক্ষেত্রে উল্লেখ্যযোগ্য অবদানের জন্য এই সংস্থাগুলির প্রতি বিশেষ কৃতজ্ঞতা জ্ঞাপন করেন। তিনি বলেন, “বিভিন্ন মহামারি, চলমান মানবিক এবং জলবায়ু সংকটজনিত কারণে জাতিসংঘের উন্নয়ন এজেন্ডা বাস্তবায়ন যে সকল প্রতিবন্ধকতার সম্মুখীন হচ্ছে, তা উত্তরণে ইউএনডিপি, ইউএনএফপিএ, ইউএনওপিএস-কে আরো অধিকতর সমন্বিত প্রচেষ্টা অব্যাহত রাখার প্রয়োজন হবে। আর তাদের এই প্রচেষ্টায় নির্বাহী বোর্ড সকল ধরণের সহযোগিতা প্রদানে প্রস্তুত থাকবে।”
প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার দূরদর্শী নেতৃত্বে বাংলাদেশ বহুপাক্ষিক ফোরামে ইতোমধ্যে একটি অত্যন্ত মর্যদাপূর্ণ আসনে অধিষ্ঠিত হয়েছে। এর ফলে জাতিসংঘ ও এর বিভিন্ন অঙ্গ-সংগঠনসমূহের সঙ্গে বাংলাদেশের যে সুদৃঢ় আস্থা ও বিশ্বাসের সম্পর্ক তৈরি হয়েছে, এই নির্বাচন তারই প্রতিফলন। তাছাড়া, প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার বলিষ্ঠ নেতৃত্বে টেকসই উন্নয়নের ক্ষেত্রে বাংলাদেশ যে অনন্য সাফল্য অর্জন করেছে, তার প্রতি দৃঢ় স্বীকৃতিরও স্বাক্ষর বহন করে এই নির্বাচন।
উল্লেখ্য, ২০২২ সালে জাতিসংঘে বাংলাদেশের স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি হিসেবে যোগদানের পর থেকে রাষ্ট্রদূত মুহিত জাতিসংঘ শান্তি বিনির্মাণ কমিশনের সভাপতি, ইউএন উইমেন এর নির্বাহী বোর্ডের সভাপতি এবং ইউএনডিপি, ইউএনএফপিএ, ইউএনওপিএস এর সহ-সভাপতি হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেন।
