বাংলাদেশ হাইকমিশন, অটোয়া ১৫ আগস্ট ২০২৩ তারিখে যথাযোগ্য মর্যাদায় সর্বকালের শ্রেষ্ঠ বাঙালি ও মহান স্বাধীনতার রূপকার জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের ৪৮তম শাহাদত বার্ষিকী ও জাতীয় শোক দিবস পালন করে। সকালে বাংলাদেশ হাউজে হাইকমিশনের কর্মকর্তা ও কর্মচারীবৃন্দের উপস্থিতিতে মান্যবর হাইকমিশনার ড. খলিলুর রহমান কর্তৃক জাতীয় পতাকা অর্ধনমিত উত্তোলনের মাধ্যমে দিবসটির কর্মসূচি শুরু হয়।
এরপর বেলা ৩.০০ ঘটিকায় বাংলাদেশ হাইকমিশনের অডিটরিয়ামে মান্যবর হাইকমিশনারের সভাপতিত্বে একটি শোকসভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। এতে দূতাবাসের কর্মকর্তা-কর্মচারীবৃন্দ এবং কানাডায় বসবাসরত বাংলাদেশ কমিউনিটির ব্যক্তিবর্গ উপস্থিত ছিলেন। অনুষ্ঠানের শুরুতে জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান ও বঙ্গমাতা শেখ ফজিলাতুন নেছা মুজিবসহ ১৫ আগস্টের সকল শহিদের প্রতি সম্মান প্রদর্শন করে ১ মিনিট নীরবতা পালন করা হয়। এরপর বঙ্গবন্ধুর প্রতিকৃতিতে পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পণ করেন মান্যবর হাইকমিশনার ড. খলিলুর রহমান ও কানাডার বসবাসরত বাংলাদেশি কমিউনিটির নেতৃবৃন্দ। পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পণের পর ঢাকা থেকে প্রেরিত মহামান্য রাষ্ট্রপতি, মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী, মাননীয় পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রী ও মাননীয় পররাষ্ট্র প্রতিমন্ত্রীর বাণী পাঠ করে শুনানো হয়। বাণী পাঠের পর বঙ্গবন্ধুর মহিমান্বিত জীবন ও কর্মের উপর একটি আলোকচিত্র প্রদর্শন করা হয়।
উক্ত আলোচনা অনুষ্ঠানে কানাডায় বসবাসরত বীর মুক্তিযোদ্ধাবৃন্দসহ বাংলাদেশ কমিউনিটির ব্যক্তিবর্গ বক্তব্য রাখেন। বক্তব্যে তাঁরা একটি স্বাধীন সার্বভৌম বাংলাদেশ রাষ্ট্র এবং বাঙালি জাতিস্বত্তা সৃষ্টিতে বঙ্গবন্ধুর কর্ম ও অবদানের উপর আলোকপাত করেন। সদ্য সৃষ্ট একটি স্বাধীন দেশকে পুর্ণগঠনে মাত্র সাড়ে তিন বছরের শাসনকালে জাতির পিতা আমাদেরকে যে শক্ত ভিত্তি গড়ে দিয়েছেন বলে বক্তারা উল্লেখ করেন। তাঁরা ২০৪১ সালের মধ্যে বাংলাদেশকে একটি উন্নত দেশে পরিণত করতে বঙ্গবন্ধুর সুযোগ্য কন্যা মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার হাতকে শক্তিশালী করার অঙ্গীকার করেন। তাঁরা আরো বলেন, বঙ্গবন্ধু আমাদের অস্তিত্ব, তিনি আমাদের মানচিত্র দিয়েছেন এবং তাঁর অবদান আকাশচুম্বি। বক্তারা আরো বলেন, বঙ্গবন্ধুকে খুনি চক্র হত্যা করতে পারলেও তাঁর আর্দশকে তারা হত্যা করতে পারেনি।
সভাপতির বক্তব্যে মান্যবর হাইকমিশনার ড. খলিলুর রহমান সর্বকালের শ্রেষ্ঠ বাঙালি জাতির পিতা ও বঙ্গমাতাসহ ১৫ আগস্টের সকল শহিদের প্রতি গভীর শ্রদ্ধা জ্ঞাপন করেন। তিনি বলেন, পাকিস্তান সৃষ্টির শুরু থেকে পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানি গোষ্ঠী কর্তৃক বাঙালি জাতির উপর সকল নিপীড়ন, বৈষম্য ও অত্যাচারের বিরুদ্ধে প্রতিটি আন্দোলনে জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান নেতৃত্বদান করেছেন। ৭ই মার্চের রেসকোর্সের লাখো জনতার সামনে বঙ্গবন্ধুর ভাষণ বাঙালির স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামের অমর কবিতা। তিনি আরও বলেন, বঙ্গবন্ধু একটি ধর্মনিরপেক্ষ অসাম্প্রদায়িক ‘সোনার বাংলা’ গড়ার স্বপ্ন দেখেছিলেন। সে লক্ষ্যে স্বাধীনতার মাত্র ০১ বছরের মধ্যে জাতীয়তাবাদ, গণতন্ত্র, সমাজতন্ত্র ও ধর্মনিরপেক্ষতাকে রাষ্ট্র পরিচালনার মূলনীতি নির্ধারণ করে বাঙালি জাতিকে জাতির পিতা একটি সংবিধান উপহার দেন। ১৯৭৫ এর ১৫ আগস্টের কালো রাতে বঙ্গবন্ধুকে হত্যার মাধ্যমে বাংলাদেশের অসাম্প্রদায়িক মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চেতনাকে মুছে ফেলার অপপ্রয়াসের সূচনা করা হয়। পরবর্তীতে খুনি সামরিক শাসকগোষ্ঠী বাংলাদেশকে সন্ত্রাস ও মৌলবাদের চারণভূমিতে পরিণত করতে চেয়েছিল। ১৯৭৫ এর ১৫ আগস্ট বিদেশে থাকার কারণে ঘাতকের বুলেট থেকে বেঁচে যাওয়া তাঁরই সুযোগ্য কন্যা মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা ক্ষমতা গ্রহণ করে বঙ্গবন্ধুর খুনিদের এবং ১৯৭১ এর মানবতাবিরোধী অপরাধী, রাজাকার, আলবদরদের বিচার নিশ্চিত করে দেশকে মুক্তিযুদ্ধের মূল চেতনায় ফিরিয়ে আনেন।
শেখ হাসিনার নেতৃত্বে বাংলাদেশকে ২০৪১ সালের মধ্যে সুখী, সমৃদ্ধ স্মার্ট বাংলাদেশ গড়ে তুলতে হাইকমিশনার সকলকে একযোগে কাজ করতে আহ্বান জানান। কানাডায় আশ্রিত বঙ্গবন্ধুর আত্মস্বীকৃত খুনী নুর চৌধুরীকে দেশে ফিরিয়ে নিয়ে তার ফাঁসি কার্যকরের মাধ্যমে ন্যায় বিচার প্রতিষ্ঠা করতে কানাডাস্থ বাংলাদেশ হাইকমিশন সকল প্রকার কূটনৈতিক প্রচেষ্টাকে অব্যাহত রাখবে বলে তিনি দৃঢ় অঙ্গীকার ব্যক্ত করেন। এক্ষেত্রে কানাডার সাধারণ জনগণ, সরকার ও রাজনৈতিক দলগুলোর নেতৃস্থানীয় ব্যক্তিবর্গদের এই খুনীর ঘৃণ্য অপরাধের বিষয়ে সংবেদনশীল করতে তিনি কানাডাস্থ বাংলাদেশি কমিউনিটির সাহায্য কামনা করেন।
সবশেষে, জাতির পিতাসহ ১৫ আগস্টের সকল শহীদের আত্মার মাগফিরাত কামনা করে বিশেষ মোনাজাত অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।

Observance of the 48th Martyrdom Anniversary of Father of the Nation and National Mourning Day by Bangladesh High Commission in Canada.
The Bangladesh High Commission in Canada solemnly observed the 48th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Mourning Day on 15 August 2023. The day’s proceedings commenced with the hoisting of the national flag at half mast at Bangladesh House by His Excellency Dr. Khalilur Rahman with the participation of officers and officials of the High Commission.
Later in the afternoon, a condolence event chaired by H.E. the High Commissioner was convened in the auditorium of the High Commission. The event was attended by High Commission officials and members of the Bangladesh Community residing in Canada. The ceremony commenced with a one-minute silence to honor the memory of Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib as well as other martyrs of 15 August 1975. After that, the High Commissioner and leaders of the Bangladesh Community laid separate floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu. Following this, messages by Hon’ble President, Hon’ble Prime Minister, Hon’ble Foreign Minister and Hon’ble State Minister for Foreign Affairs were read out by the officers of the High Commissioner. This was followed by the screening of a documentary showcasing the life long struggle of Bangabandhu for an independent country.
Freedom Fighters and leading figures from Bangladesh Community in Canada delivered speeches during the discussion segment highlighting Bangabandhu’s pivotal role in establishing an independent and sovereign Bangladesh as well as fostering Bengali nationhood. The speakers pledged their unwavering support to Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s vision of a developed Bangladesh by 2041, building upon the solid foundation laid by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman during his brief but transformative leadership. The speakers said that Bangabandhu’s legacy remains an integral part of Bangalee identity, providing guidance and inspiration in building a prosperous Bangladesh.
In his address, H.E. the High Commissioner Dr. Khalilur Rahman paid profound respects to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and other martyrs of 15 August 1975. The High Commissioner highlighted Bangabandhu’s tireless efforts in the face of oppression, discrimination, and tyranny by the West Pakistani authorities since the creation of Pakistan in 1947 till the emergence of an independent Bangladesh in 1971. He termed Bangabandhu’s historic 7 March speech as a testament to the Bengali people’s struggle and yearning for freedom. He underscored that with the dream of a secular, non-communal “Golden Bengal” Bangabandhu gave us a constitution within a year of independence, guiding the state in the principles of nationalism, democracy, socialism, and secularism.
Reflecting on the tragic events of 15 August 1975, the High Commissioner lamented the attempt to erase the spirit of Bangladesh’s non-communal spirit of liberation through the assassination of Bangabandhu. He acknowledged that despite adversity from extremists and anti-liberation forces, the country returned to the path of the liberation war’s secular ideals under the stewardship of Bangabandhu’s able daughter, the current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The High Commissioner urged collective commitment to transform Bangladesh into a prosperous, knowledge-based nation by 2041, under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s leadership. He reaffirmed High Commission’s continuous diplomatic endeavors to deport Nur Chowdhury, one of the self-confessed killers of Bangabandhu currently sheltered Canada, to Bangladesh to ensure justice. The High Commissioner pledges to make it a ‘Different August’ about deporting the killer of Bangabandhu. The High Commissioner solicited the support of the Bangladesh Community in Canada to raise awareness of this grave matter among the Canadian public, government bodies, and political parties.
The event concluded with a special prayer to honor the souls of Bangabandhu and other martyrs of 15 August 1975.
