Bangladesh Embassy in Washington observes “Martyred Intellectuals Day”
Washington DC, 15 December, 2023- The Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC on Thursday (14 December) observed the “Martyred Intellectuals’ Day” by paying glowing tributes to the golden sons of the soil who were brutally killed by the Pakistan occupation forces and their local collaborators on the eve of the ultimate victory in the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
The program of the Embassy commenced by placing a floral wreath by Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States Mr. Muhammad Imran at the bust of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangabandhu Corner. Officials and employees of the Mission were present on the occasion.
Later, messages issued on the occasion by Hon’ble President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina were read out by Minister (Consular) Mohammad Habibur Rahman and Minister (Political) Md. Rashedujjaman at the Bangabandhu Corner. Afterward, a discussion session highlighting the significance of the day was held.
Addressing the discussion, Ambassador Muhammad Imran paid rich tributes to martyred intellectuals. He also paid deep homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and all martyrs of the great Liberation War.
The Ambassador said the barbaric killing of the golden sons of the soil by the Pakistani occupation forces and their local collaborators is one of the grave human rights violations in the human history and urged all to highlight this heinous killing before the world conscience by observing the day on a larger scale.
The heinous killing of the eminent intellectuals of the country was also an irreparable loss to the nation, Ambassador Imran said and called upon all to work in unison to build a hunger-and-poverty-free ‘Sonar Bangla’ being imbued with the spirit of the great Liberation War and the sacrifices of the martyred intellectuals.
Taking part in the discussion, Minister (Press) AZM Sajjad Hossain described 14th December as one of the disgraceful days in the history of the Bengali nation and said the the Pakistani occupation forces and their local collaborators killed eminent intellectuals at the fag-end of the Liberation War in a bid to make the nation meritless.
Some war criminals have fled Bangladesh and took shelter in different countries to evade their crimes against humanity in 1971, he said and urged the countries concerned to extradite the killers to Bangladesh immediately to face justice.
The program of the day ended with offering a special prayer seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of martyred intellectuals, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and all martyrs of the Liberation War. Counsellor and Head of Chancery Shamima Yasmin Smrite conducted the program.

ওয়াশিংটন ডিসি, 15ডিসেম্বর, 2023- ১৯৭১ সালে মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধে চূড়ান্ত বিজয়ের প্রাক্কালে পাকিস্তানি হানাদার বাহিনী এবং তাদের এদেশীয় দোসরদের হাতে নির্মমভাবে নিহত এ মাটির শ্রেষ্ঠ সন্তানদের প্রতি গভীর শ্রদ্ধা নিবেদনের মাধ্যমে বৃহস্পতিবার (14 ডিসেম্বর) ওয়াশিংটন ডিসিস্থ বাংলাদেশ দূতাবাসে ‘শহিদ বুদ্ধিজীবী দিবস’ পালিত হয়েছে
যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রদূত জনাব মোহাম্মদ ইমরান কর্তৃক বঙ্গবন্ধু কর্নারে অবস্থিত জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের আবক্ষ ভাস্কর্যে পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পণের মাধ্যমে দিনের কর্মসূচি শুরু হয়। এ সময় মিশনের কর্মকর্তা-কর্মচারীবৃন্দ উপস্থিত ছিলেন।
পরে বঙ্গবন্ধু মিলনায়তনে এ উপলক্ষে মহামান্য রাষ্ট্রপতি মোহাম্মদ সাহাবুদ্দিন ও মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা প্রদত্ত বাণী পাঠ করে শোনান মিনিস্টার (কনস্যুলার) মোহাম্মদ হাবিবুর রহমান এবং মিনিস্টার (পলিটিক্যাল) মোঃ রাশেদুজ্জামান। এরপরে দিনটির তাৎপর্য তুলে ধরে এক আলোচনা সভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।
আলোচনা সভায় অংশ নিয়ে রাষ্ট্রদূত ইমরান শহিদ বুদ্ধিজীবীদের প্রতি গভীর শ্রদ্ধা জ্ঞাপন করেন। তিনি জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান ও মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সকল শহিদের প্রতিও গভীর শ্রদ্ধা জানান।
তিনি পাকিস্তানি হানাদার বাহিনী ও তাদের দোসরদের দ্বারা বিশিষ্ট বুদ্ধিজীবীদের বর্বরোচিত হত্যাযজ্ঞকে মানব ইতিহাসের অন্যতম গুরুতর মানবাধিকার লঙ্ঘন বলে অভিহিত করেন এবং এই দিনটি আরো বৃহৎ পরিসরে পালনের মাধ্যমে এই নৃশংস হত্যাযজ্ঞকে বিশ্ববাসীর সামনে তুলে ধরার জন্য সকলের প্রতি আহ্বান জানান।
রাষ্ট্রদূত ইমরান বলেন, এই নৃশংস হত্যাযজ্ঞ ছিল জাতির জন্য একটি অপূরণীয় ক্ষতি। তিনি মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চেতনা ও শহিদ বুদ্ধিজীবীদের আত্মত্যাগে উদ্বুদ্ধ হয়ে ক্ষুধা ও দারিদ্র্যমুক্ত সোনার বাংলা গড়তে সবাইকে ঐক্যবদ্ধভাবে কাজ করার অনুরোধ জানান ।
আলোচনায় অংশ নিয়ে মিনিস্টার (প্রেস) এজেডএম সাজ্জাদ হোসেন ১৪ ডিসেম্বরকে বাঙালি জাতির ইতিহাসে একটি কলঙ্কজনক দিন হিসেবে বর্ণনা করেন। তিনি বলেন পাকিস্তানি হানাদার বাহিনী ও তাদের দোসররা এই দিনে দেশের প্রখ্যাত বুদ্ধিজীবীদের হত্যা করে জাতিকে মেধাশূন্য করতে চেয়েছিল।
একাত্তরে মানবতাবিরোধী অপরাধের শাস্তি এড়াতে কিছু যুদ্ধাপরাধী বাংলাদেশ থেকে পালিয়ে বিভিন্ন দেশে আশ্রয় নিয়েছে বলে তিনি উল্লেখ করেন এবং খুনিদের বিচারের মুখোমুখি করতে অবিলম্বে তাদের বাংলাদেশে ফেরত পাঠানোর জন্য সংশ্লিষ্ট দেশগুলোর প্রতি আহ্বান জানান।
শহিদ বুদ্ধিজীবী, জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান এবং মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সকল শহিদের বিদেহী আত্মার মাগফেরাত কামনা করে এক বিশেষ মোনাজাতের মধ্য দিয়ে দিনের কর্মসূচি শেষ হয়। কর্মসূচি পরিচালনা করেন কাউন্সেলর ও দূতালয় প্রধান শামীমা ইয়াসমিন স্মৃতি।
