Bangladesh Secures Resounding Victory in ECOSOC Election for the term 2025-2027
New York, 07 June 2024: Today, Bangladesh was elected as a member of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of the principal organs of the United Nations, for the term 2025-2027 from the Asia-Pacific region; by securing 181 votes out of 189 votes. The election was held at the UN General Assembly Hall. Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan were the other countries elected from the same region. ECOSOC is also the most important platform of the UN system and for that matter multilateral diplomacy, when it comes to development and social issues.
Under the visionary and dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh is making remarkable progress towards achieving Agenda 2030 and the ‘Vision 2041: Transforming Bangladesh into a Smart Nation.’ Widely regarded as a ‘role model’ for socio-economic development, Bangladesh’s advancements have earned international recognition. Diplomats from various countries at the election venue commented, “This victory is a global acknowledgment of Bangladesh’s development success.” Indeed, Bangladesh’s ongoing successes in international elections in general, and this highly prestigious election in particular, manifest the confidence, trust and appreciation that our nation is receiving from the international community. Only yesterday, Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations was elected as the Chair of the Economic and Financial Committee (Second Committee) of the United Nations General Assembly for its 79th Session.
The election was conducted under the Presidency of Mr. Dennis Francis, the President of the 78th United Nations General Assembly, through a secret ballot. “This is a recognition of Bangladesh’s unique success in achieving sustainable development through innovative means under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina; and a demonstration of the trust and confidence that Bangladesh enjoys in the international arena,” said the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN, Ambassador Muhammad A. Muhith, while speaking after the election. Referring to Bangladesh’s upcoming graduation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) status to a developing country in 2026, Ambassador Muhith added, “Membership in ECOSOC will be critical for our smooth and sustainable graduation and expedite our progress towards implementing Agenda 2030.”
Membership in ECOSOC will enable Bangladesh to enhance its visibility and efforts, in implementing Agenda 2030 through policy formulation and active participation in various forums, commissions, committees, executive boards, and regional platforms like the UN-ESCAP. This would also enable us to share our best developmental practices with the rest of the world, mentioned the Ambassador.
It may be mentioned that Bangladesh is the current President of the Executive Board of the UNDP/UNFPS/UNOPS.
Bangladesh will commence its ECOSOC membership from January 2025.
জাতিসংঘ অর্থনৈতিক ও সামাজিক পরিষদের ২০২৫-২০২৭ মেয়াদের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নির্বাচনে বাংলাদেশের বিজয়
নিউইয়র্ক, ০৭ জুন ২০২৪: আজ জাতিসংঘের অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অঙ্গ অর্থনৈতিক ও সামাজিক পরিষদ (ECOSOC) এর ২০২৫-২০২৭ মেয়াদের নির্বাচনে বাংলাদেশ এশিয়া-প্রশান্ত মহাসাগরীয় অঞ্চলের প্রার্থী হিসেবে ১৮৯ ভোটের মধ্যে ১৮১ ভোট পেয়ে নির্বাচিত হয়েছে। জাতিসংঘ সাধারণ পরিষদের সভাকক্ষে আজ নির্বাচনটি অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। এশিয়া-প্রশান্ত মহাসাগরীয় অঞ্চল থেকে বাংলাদেশ ছাড়াও সৌদি আরব, শ্রীলঙ্কা ও উজবেকিস্তান এ নির্বাচনে জয়লাভ করে। ECOSOC জাতিসংঘের মূল ৬টি অঙ্গের একটি এবং বহুপক্ষীয় ও উন্নয়ন কূটনীতি প্রশ্নে জাতিসংঘের সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্লাটফরম হিসেবে বিবেচিত।
প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার দূরদর্শী ও গতিশীল নেতৃত্বে বাংলাদেশ জাতিসংঘের ২০৩০ এজেন্ডা ও ভিশন-২০৪১: স্মার্ট বাংলাদেশ বিনির্মাণ বাস্তবায়নে অভূতপূর্ব সাফল্য অর্জন করে চলছে। সামাজিক ও অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়নের ক্ষেত্রে রোল মডেল হিসেবে বিবেচিত বাংলাদেশের উন্নয়ন বৈশ্বিক স্বীকৃতি অর্জন করেছে। নির্বাচনস্থলে বিভিন্ন দেশের কূটনীতিকবৃন্দ বাংলাদেশের বিজয় কে “বাংলাদেশের উন্নয়ন সফলতার বৈশ্বিক স্বীকৃতির অংশ এ বিজয়” হিসেবে আখ্যায়িত করেছেন। বস্তুত, বাংলাদেশ যে অন্যান্য দেশের বিশ্বাস, নির্ভরতা ও সম্মান অর্জন করেছে – সাধারণ বিবেচনায় বাংলাদেশের অব্যাহত বৈশ্বিক নির্বাচনে সাফল্য – বিশেষত, অত্যন্ত সম্মানজনক এ নির্বাচনের সাফল্য – তারই স্বীকৃতি। গতকালই রাষ্ট্রদূত ও স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি মুহাম্মাদ আব্দুল মুহিত জাতিসংঘের অর্থনৈতিক বিষয় সংক্রান্ত কমিটির (২য় কমিটি) সভাপতি নির্বাচিত হয়েছেন।
জাতিসংঘের ৭৮তম সাধারণ পরিষদের সভাপতি জনাব ডেনিস ফ্রান্সিস-এর সভাপতিত্বে গোপন ব্যালটের মাধ্যমে এ নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। নির্বাচনের বিজয় বার্তায় জাতিসংঘে বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রদূত ও স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি মুহাম্মদ আব্দুল মুহিত বলেন, “এ বিজয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার গতিশীল ও সৃষ্টিশীল নেতৃত্বে বাংলাদেশের অব্যাহত উন্নয়নের স্বীকৃতি এবং আন্তর্জাতিক অঙ্গনে বাংলাদেশের প্রতি আন্তর্জাতিক সম্প্রদায়ের আস্থা ও বিশ্বাসের বহিঃপ্রকাশ”। স্বল্পোন্নত দেশের তালিকা থেকে বাংলাদেশের ২০২৬ সালে উন্নয়নশীল দেশে উত্তরণের প্রতি গুরুত্ব আরোপ করে রাষ্ট্রদূত ও স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি মুহিত বলেন, “ইকোসকের সদস্যপদ আমাদের স্বল্পোন্নত দেশ হতে উন্নয়নশীল দেশে অবাধ ও টেকসই উত্তোরণের জন্য অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করবে।”
ইকোসকের সদস্যপদ জাতিসংঘের বিভিন্ন ফোরাম, কমিশন, কমিটি, নির্বাহী বোর্ড, ইউএনএসকাপ-এর মতো আঞ্চলিক প্লাটফরমসমূহে সহায়ক নীতি প্রণয়নসহ বাংলাদেশের নেতৃত্ব এবং জাতিসংঘের ২০৩০ এজেন্ডা বাস্তবায়নের অব্যাহত প্রচেষ্টাকে আরো শক্তিশালী করবে। এ বিজয় আমাদের উন্নয়ন অভিজ্ঞতার সাফল্যসমূহকে বিশ্বের সাথে ভাগাভাগি করে নিতে সহায়ক হবে বলে রাষ্ট্রদূত মুহিত উল্লেখ করেন।
উল্লেখ্য যে, বাংলাদেশ বর্তমানে ইউএনডিপি/ইউএনএফপিএ/ ইউএনঅপ্স-এর নির্বাহী বোর্ডের সভাপতি হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করছে।
ECOSOC-এ আগামী ২০২৫ সালের জানুয়ারি মাস থেকে তিন বছর মেয়াদে (২০২৫-২০২৭) বাংলাদেশ দায়িত্ব পালন করবে।
