Grameenphone organizes session with Shykh Seraj, promoting urban agriculture to foster sustainability
[Dhaka, 08 August 2023] To commemorate World Nature Conservation Day, Grameenphone, as a responsible corporate citizen, has recently taken an exemplary initiative to create awareness about the utmost importance of preserving nature and its resources. The Nature and Society Club of Grameenphone has organized a two-day tree fair, which comprises a session titled ‘Fostering a Green & Sustainable Environment’ with renowned media personality and agriculture development activist Shykh Seraj and a tree plantation program for its employees, aligning with its sustainability motto – promoting actions within and outside the organization to tackle climate change impacts.
Carbon emission has become a serious global crisis in this era of globalization. Thus, Grameenphone has been working on various initiatives to reduce carbon footprint across its operations. The company believes now is the time to consider urban agriculture, including rooftop gardening, as a part of the climate solutions.
The session was held at GP House premises in the capital and witnessed the exuberance presence of Grameenphone employees, where Shykh Seraj underscored the need to put emphasis on gardening practices and the significance of tree plantation for fostering a sustainable environment, resonating with Grameenphone’s beliefs. He also shed light on different sustainable practices, such as gardening in urban spaces (balcony spaces, rooftop gardening), which could have significant impacts on individual well-being and the environment.
Grameenphone always puts the environment and its related issues at the core of its strategic focus and remains committed to doing business in a responsible way, creating value for all the stakeholders and society, as well as empowering and sustaining the nation for future generations through upskilling and building digital resilience. In its continuation, Grameenphone has adopted an Environment Management System (EMS) to streamline its operations and reduce 50% of its own carbon emissions (CO2) by 2030, taking 2019 as the baseline. The company has also deployed 1200 towers supported by solar panels in remote corners of the country to minimize the digital divide by connecting the unconnected.
“Thanks to technological advancement, young generations can now engage with agriculture and urban agriculture” said Shykh Seraj, a journalist working for four and a half decades to promote farmers. He also expressed his hope that agricultural productivity will increase multiple times in the future. He shared, “You have a mobile phone and you are connected to IoT. You will get notifications about whether your plants need water or not. You can simply do this with the use of technology. We are developing day by day, and now we are now focusing on agriculture. New technologies are being emerged – such as IoT, Artificial Intelligence, etc. If these technologies are incorporated into agriculture, our agriculture ecosystem will take a huge leap forward and beyond, and undoubtedly, productivity will increase manifold. It is crucial for all of us to work on these issues.”
Syed Tanvir Husain, Chief Human Resources Officer of Grameenphone, said, “We believe that it’s not practically possible to develop Smart Citizen unless people learn to make smart choices that will help conserve our nature. Keeping that in mind, as we believe the time is now, Grameenphone has adopted different climate initiatives for conducting its own operations in a sustainable way along with creating awareness. At the same time, we aim to make the planet more livable for the next generations, empower them with knowledge, and make them digitally resilient. If we want to gift something to the next generation, it should be a Safe Planet, A Green Planet. Our session with Shykh Seraj has enlightened us in this regard and provided us a way forward.”
As a reflection of its continuous efforts toward a greener future, going by the commitment to conserve nature, the tree plantation program was held at Ansar Camp, where both Shykh Seraj and Syed Tanvir Husain, Chief Human Resources Officer of Grameenphone, were present to initiate the good work. The ‘Tree Fair’ was held at GP House premises on 2nd and 3rd August. Internal employees got the chance to select from an array of options – from ornamental plants to fruit-bearing trees – offered by BRAC Nursey and Foysal Nursery.

বিশ্বায়নের এই যুগে কার্বন নিঃসরণ এক গুরুতর বৈশ্বিক সঙ্কটে পরিণত হয়েছে। নিজেদের কার্যক্রমে বিভিন্ন উদ্যোগ গ্রহণের মাধ্যমে কার্বন ফুটপ্রিন্ট কমিয়ে আনার লক্ষ্যে কাজ করছে গ্রামীণফোন। প্রতিষ্ঠানটির বিশ্বাস, জলবায়ু সমস্যা সমাধানের অংশ হিসাবে শহরে বাসাবাড়িতে ছাদ বাগান কার্যক্রমের মত নগর-কৃষির বিভিন্ন উদ্যোগ গ্রহণের এখনই সময়।
রাজধানীর জিপি হাউস প্রাঙ্গণে অনুষ্ঠিত সেশনটিতে গ্রামীণফোন কর্মীদের প্রাণবন্ত উপস্থিতি লক্ষ্য করা যায়। অনুষ্ঠানে জনাব শাইখ সিরাজ টেকসই পরিবেশের জন্য বাগান করার অভ্যাস গড়ে তোলা এবং বৃক্ষরোপণের তাৎপর্যের উপর জোর দেন, যা গ্রামীণফোনেরও অন্যতম প্রতিপাদ্য। তিনি শহরে বাসাবাড়িতে বারান্দা বা ছাদের ফাঁকা স্থানে বাগান গড়ে তোলার মত বিভিন্ন টেকসই অনুশীলনের উপরও আলোকপাত করেন, যা ব্যক্তি ও পরিবেশ উভয়ের উপরই উল্লেখযোগ্য প্রভাব ফেলতে পারে।
পরিবেশ এবং এর সাথে সম্পর্কিত বিষয় সমূহকে সবসময় নিজেদের কৌশলগত পরিকল্পনার মূলে বিবেচনা করে গ্রামীণফোন। দায়িত্বশীলভাবে ব্যবসা পরিচালনায় প্রতিশ্রুতিবদ্ধ প্রতিষ্ঠানটি এর সকল অংশীজন ও সমাজের কল্যাণে সক্রিয় ভূমিকা পালন করছে। সেইসাথে, জাতির ক্ষমতায়ন ও টেকসই প্রবৃদ্ধির লক্ষ্যে ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মের দক্ষতার উন্নয়ন ও ডিজিটাল সক্ষমতা তৈরিতেও প্রতিষ্ঠানটি কাজ করে যাচ্ছে। এর ধারাবাহিকতায়, এনভায়রনমেন্ট ম্যানেজমেন্ট সিস্টেম (ইএমএস) ব্যবস্থার মাধ্যমে আগামী ২০৩০ সালের মধ্যে নিজ প্রতিষ্ঠানের কার্বন (সিওটু) নিঃসরণের মাত্রা ২০১৯ সালের মাত্রার তুলনায় অর্ধেকে কমিয়ে আনার লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ করেছে গ্রামীণফোন। দেশে ডিজিটাল বৈষম্যের মাত্রা কমিয়ে আনতে প্রতিষ্ঠানটি দেশের প্রত্যন্ত অঞ্চলসমূহে ১২শ’টি সৌরবিদ্যুৎ চালিত টাওয়ার স্থাপন করেছে।
বিগত সাড়ে চার দশক ধরে কৃষি ও কৃষকদের কল্যাণে একাগ্রে কাজ করে যাচ্ছেন শাইখ সিরাজ। আলোচনায় তিনি বলেন, “প্রযুক্তিগত অগ্রগতির কল্যাণে এখন তরুণ প্রজন্ম কৃষি ও নগর কৃষির সাথে সম্পৃক্ত হতে পারছে।” আগামীতে কৃষিজ উৎপাদন আরো বহুগুণ বৃদ্ধির আশাবাদ ব্যক্ত করে তিনি বলেন, “আপনার কাছে একটি মোবাইল ফোন আছে এবং আপনি আইওটি’র সাথে সংযুক্ত। কেবল প্রযুক্তি ব্যবহারের মাধ্যমেই এখন আপনার গাছে পানি দেওয়া প্রয়োজন কি না, সে সম্পর্কে নোটিফিকেশন পাবেন। আমরা প্রতিনিয়ত উন্নয়নের পথে হাঁটছি এবং কৃষিখাতেও এখন আমাদের মনোযোগ রয়েছে। আইওটি ও কৃত্রিম বুদ্ধিমত্তার মত নতুন নতুন প্রযুক্তি নিয়মিতভাবে আবির্ভূত হচ্ছে। যদি আমাদের কৃষিকাজে এসব প্রযুক্তি ব্যবহার করা যায়, তাহলে নিঃসন্দেহে গোটা কৃষি ব্যবস্থা এক ধাপ এগিয়ে যাবে এবং উৎপাদনশীলতা বহুগুণ বৃদ্ধি পাবে। তাই, এই দিকগুলো নিয়ে আমাদের সবার একসাথে কাজ করতে হবে।”
গ্রামীণফোনের প্রধান মানবসম্পদ কর্মকর্তা সৈয়দ তানভির হোসেন বলেন, “আমরা যদি পরিবেশ ও প্রকৃতি সংরক্ষণে স্মার্ট সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণের সক্ষমতা তৈরিতে ব্যর্থ হই, তাহলে স্মার্ট নাগরিক গড়ে তোলা অসম্ভব হবে। বিষয়টি বিবেচনায় নিয়ে বর্তমানের সম্ভাবনাকে কাজ লাগিয়ে জনসচেতনতা তৈরির পাশাপাশি টেকসই উপায়ে নিজেদের কার্যক্রম পরিচালনার ক্ষেত্রে বিভিন্ন জলবায়ু সংরক্ষণমূলক পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ করেছে গ্রামীণফোন। সেই সাথে, আমরা ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মের জন্য পৃথিবীকে আরো বাসযোগ্য করে তুলতে চাই, শিক্ষার মাধ্যমে তাদের ক্ষমতায়ন ঘটাতে চাই এবং তাদেরকে ডিজিটাল দক্ষতায় অনন্য করে তুলতে চাই। ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মকে যদি আমাদের উপহার দেওয়ার মত কিছু থাকে, সেটি হবে একটি সবুজ ও নিরাপদ পৃথিবী। শাইখ সিরাজের অংশগ্রহণে আমাদের সেশনটি ঠিক এই প্রসঙ্গেই আলোকপাত করেছে এবং আমাদের সামনে এগিয়ে যাওয়ার পথ দেখিয়েছে।”
পরিবেশ সংরক্ষণ ও সবুজ ভবিষ্যৎ গঠনের প্রত্যয়কে সমুজ্জ্বল রেখে রাজধানীর আনসার ক্যাম্পে বৃক্ষরোপণ কার্যক্রম অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। শাইখ সিরাজ এবং গ্রামীণফোনের প্রধান মানবসম্পদ কর্মকর্তা সৈয়দ তানভির হোসেন উভয়েই উপস্থিত থেকে আয়োজনকে সফল করে তোলেন। এছাড়াও, ০২ ও ০৩ আগস্ট তারিখে জিপি হাউস প্রাঙ্গণে আয়োজিত হয় ‘বৃক্ষ মেলা।’ গ্রামীণফোনের কর্মীবৃন্দ ব্র্যাক নার্সারি ও ফয়সাল নার্সারি থেকে বিভিন্ন শোভাবর্ধনকারি ও ফলজ বৃক্ষ থেকে পছন্দ অনুযায়ী গাছ কিনে নেন।
