Back-to-school road safety campaign
Saint-Laurent steps up safety efforts around schools
Saint-Laurent, September 8, 2022 – As thousands of students return to school, Saint-Laurent is pleased to announce an investment of more than $3.6 million this year, jointly with Ville de Montréal, to ensure the safety and convenience of transit on its territory, particularly in school zones.
In addition to this major initiative, Saint-Laurent is blazing the trail for other Quebec boroughs and municipalities by adding some forty child-shaped signs on its residential streets. These beacons have the height and shape of a school student holding a sign saying “Attention à nos enfants!”.
Quote
“This year, the safety campaign has taken on a human approach by using characters to encourage caution. It offers the reminder that everyone has a role to play when it comes to protecting our children. This new measure is perfectly aligned with our awareness campaign and is a testament to all the development work carried out by our teams this year.”
Alan DeSousa, the Mayor of Saint-Laurent
Highlights
Among the long list of projects carried out, we note the completion of the sidewalk systems on boulevard Henri-Bourassa and the western section of boulevard Thimens. Furthermore, the Wartime neighbourhood, comprising the block delineated by boulevard Henri-Bourassa, rue Grenet, rue Poirier and avenue O’Brien, was fully secured.
Around 40 new devices were erected to reduce the speed of motorists and enhance pedestrian safety. These new devices include sidewalk curbs, speed cushions, speed bumps and raised crosswalks at intersections.
Awareness campaign
This year again, Saint-Laurent is holding a dynamic awareness campaign around schools in collaboration with the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal, the Centre de services scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys and the Commission scolaire English-Montréal.
The objective of this campaign is to encourage the adoption of safe behaviours by children in their movements, and by their parents, motorists, pedestrians and cyclists in the school zones.
Among other things, these partners have created awareness tools, including flyers handed out by the police teams from the SVPM’s poste de quartier 7 in front of the 12 schools in Saint-Laurent.
