Bangladesh Ambassador calls for transparency in vaccine trade
ভ্যাকসিন বাণিজ্যে স্বচ্ছতার আহ্বান জানিয়েছেন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রদূত
আজ (১৫ জুন) যুক্তরাষ্ট্র-বাংলাদেশ বিজনেস কাউন্সিল বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রদূত এম শহীদুল ইসলামের সম্মানে একটি ভার্চুয়াল টাউনহল আলোচনার আয়োজন করে। অনুষ্ঠানটিতে ইউএস চেম্বার অফ কমার্সের কর্মকর্তাগণ, ওয়াশিংটন ডিসিতে বাংলাদেশ দূতাবাসের কূটনীতিকবৃন্দ এবং বিভিন্ন কোম্পানীর প্রতিনিধিরা অংশগ্রহণ করেন। উপস্থিত কোম্পানীসমূহের মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য উবার, শেভরন, জেনারেল ইলেকট্রিক, মেটলাইফ, অ্যাবট, বোয়িং, পেপ্সিকো, গুগল, ফেসবুক। যুক্তরাষ্ট্র- বাংলাদেশ বিজনেস কাউন্সিলের সভাপতি নিশা বিসওয়াল অনুষ্ঠানে স্বাগত বক্তব্য প্রদান করেন।
বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রদূত এম শহীদুল ইসলাম তার বক্তব্যে বাংলাদেশের অর্থনৈতিক অগ্রাধিকার এবং কিভাবে বেসরকারী খাত দুদেশের মধ্যে ঘনিষ্ঠ অর্থনৈতিক সম্পর্ককে আরো জোরদার করতে ভূমিকা রাখতে পারে তা তুলে ধরেন। তিনি কোভিড-১৯ মহামারী দ্বারা সৃষ্ট অর্থনৈতিক প্রতিবন্ধকতাসমূহ কাটিয়ে উঠতে এবং দ্বিপক্ষীয় সহযোগিতা আরো জোরদার করার উপর গুরুত্ব আরোপ করেন। তিনি বাংলাদেশের পণ্য বিশেষত তৈরী পোশাকের উপর কর হ্রাসের বিবেচনা করার আহ্বান জানান।
রাষ্ট্রদূত শহীদুল ইসলাম বাংলাদেশের জনগণের জন্য পর্যাপ্ত ভ্যাকসিন প্রাপ্তি নিশ্চিত করার উদ্দেশ্যে মার্কিন সরকার এবং বেসরকারী খাত উভয়ের সাথে কাজ চালিয়ে যাওয়ার প্রত্যাশা ব্যক্ত করেন। উন্নয়নশীল দেশগুলিতে মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ভ্যাকসিন অনুদানের প্রশংসা করার পাশাপাশি রাষ্ট্রদূত মত প্রদান করেন যে বাণিজ্যিকভাবে ভ্যাকসিন ক্রয় বাংলাদেশের মতো জনবহুল দেশের টিকাদান কার্যক্রমকে আরও গতিশীল করবে। তিনি মার্কিন ভ্যাকসিন উৎপাদনকারী সংস্থাগুলিকে উন্নয়নশীল দেশগুলিতে বাণিজ্যিকভাবে ভ্যাকসিন রফতানির অধিকতর সুযোগ সৃষ্টি এবং এক্ষেত্রে স্বচ্ছতা নিশ্চিত করার আহ্বান জানিয়েছেন।
বাংলাদেশে বিশেষ করে বিশেষ অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চল ও হাইটেক পার্কসমূহে বিনিয়োগ করে বাংলাদেশের অনুকূল বিনিয়োগ পরিবেশের সুযোগ নিতে রাষ্ট্রদূত মার্কিন বিনিয়োগকারীদের আহ্বান জানান । তিনি বাংলাদেশের আইটি পেশাদারদের জন্য এইচ১বি ভিসা প্রাপ্তির প্রক্রিয়া সহজীকরণের জন্য মার্কিন কর্তৃপক্ষের প্রতি আহ্বান জানান।
রাষ্ট্রদূত বিমান বাংলাদেশ এয়ারলাইনস এবং বোয়িংয়ের মধ্যে দীর্ঘদিনের অংশীদারিত্বকে সুসংহত করতে বেসামরিক বিমান চলাচলে দুই সরকারের মধ্যে সহযোগিতা বাড়ানোর উপর জোর দেন। এক্ষেত্রে তিনি ঢাকা ও নিউইয়র্কের মধ্যে পুনরায় সরাসরি বিমান চালু করতে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র-বাংলাদেশ বিজনেস কাউন্সিলের সহযোগিতা চেয়েছেন।
রাষ্ট্রদূত অনুষ্ঠানে অংশগ্রহণকারীদের উত্থাপিত বিভিন্ন প্রশ্নের জবাব দেন এবং বাংলাদেশে ব্যাবসা প্রতিষ্ঠায় বাংলাদেশ সরকারের পক্ষ থেকে সকল প্রকার সহযোগিতার আশ্বাস প্রদান করেন।
Bangladesh Ambassador calls for transparency in vaccine trade
Today the U.S.-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce hosted Bangladesh Ambassador M. Shahidul Islam at a virtual townhall discussion which was participated by officials of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, diplomats from the Embassy of Bangladesh in Washington DC, and representatives from various companies such as Uber, Chevron, General Electric, MetLife, Abbott, Boeing, PepsiCo, Google, Facebook. President of the U.S.- Bangladesh Business Council Nisha Biswal delivered a welcome speech at the event.
In his speech, Bangladesh Ambassador M. Shahidul Islam highlighted the economic priorities of Bangladesh and how the private sector may contribute to fostering closer economic ties between the two countries. The Bangladesh Ambassador emphasized enhanced bilateral cooperation to help overcome economic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and advance the Bangladesh-U.S. economic partnership, including facilitating sustainable supply chains. He also urged the U.S. authorities to consider a tax moratorium on products from Bangladesh, particularly RMG, to help the Bangladesh economy.
On the vaccine issue, Ambassador Shahidul Islam expressed hope to remain engaged with the US Government and the private sector to secure adequate vaccines for the people of Bangladesh. While appreciating US donation of vaccines to developing countries, the Ambassador opined that commercial procurement of vaccines will play more important role in vaccinating a populous country like Bangladesh. He called upon the US vaccine producing companies to exercise more openness and transparency in commercial export of vaccines to developing countries.
The Ambassador extended an offer to the U.S. investors to take advantage of Bangladesh’s favorable investment climate, particularly by investing in the Special Economic Zones and High-Tech Parks. He called upon the US authorities to ease the process of obtaining H1B visa for Bangladeshi IT professionals.
He recognized the long-standing partnership between Biman Bangladesh Airlines and Boeing and stressed enhancing cooperation between the two governments on civil aviation to consolidate the partnership between Bangladesh’s national carrier and Boeing. In this regard he sought the support of US-Bangladesh Business Council in resuming direct Biman flight between Dhaka and New York.
Ambassador Islam responded to various queries raised by the participants and assured them of all sorts of support from the Bangladesh government to establish business in Bangladesh.
