A MESSAGE FROM CITY COUNCILLORS MARVIN ROTRAND AND LIONEL PEREZ
Summary: Celebration of Bangladesh’s 50th Anniversary of Independence
We are delighted to support the Bangladeshi community here in Montreal and indeed across Canada as we are fast approaching a very special occasion.
March 26 will mark 50 years since the declaration of the Independence of Bangladesh. This milestone anniversary is exceedingly meaningful to Bangladeshis and recalls the sacrifice, hardship, loss and heroism that ultimately led to independence.
Over the past month, discussions have broadened out to include Bangladesh’s new High Commissioner to Canada, Khalili Rahman and the main Bangladeshi associations in Montreal. A letter has been sent to the Bangladeshi organizations and media across Canada and we will soon launch several measures that will celebrate Bangladesh and its accomplishments.
We thank the Bangladeshi organizations who have helped us prepare the following:
- This February represents 10 years since the Borough of Côte-des-Neiges – Notre-Dame-de-Grâce adopted a motion in honour of International Mother Language Day.It has been decided to submit a new motion reaffirming the importance of International Monther Language Day and indicating the Borough’s on-going recognition of February 21 as a day in which all should cherish linguistic diversity. Accordingly, we will present a motion at the February 1, 2021 Borough Council meeting which will take place on ZOOM. Those wishing to view the meeting should email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com and we will assure you will receive the link required to attend.
- City Council meets March 22 and 23, 2021 which is perfect timing to adopt a motion of congratulations for Bangladesh’s Independence Day on March 26. We will move this motion and will ask Mary Deros who represents Parc Extension and Alan DeSousa, the Mayor of Saint-Laurent, Council members who have significant Bangladeshi populations in their territories to be sponsors as well.
- An online cultural evening will be presented on March 26. We are still finalizing whether this will be a Montreal only event or national across Canada. As well, a decision needs to be made as to whether this will occur under the auspices of one particular organization, under the sponsorship of the High Commission, or in some other format. Our goal is to find the best format to highlight Bangladeshi culture and the pride the community has in its origins.
We are certain that with the community’s active participation that we will be able to assure that Bangladesh’s 50th anniversary is memorable and that the Canadian public takes note of the country’s achievements.
