[ঢাকা, ০৭ মে’২০২৩] বাংলাদেশে সুইডেন দূতাবাসের সাথে অংশীদারিত্বে ‘ওয়াশ ফর আরবান পুওর (ওয়াশফরআপ) প্রকল্প’ এর দ্বিতীয় ধাপ উন্মোচন করেছে ওয়াটারএইড বাংলাদেশ। ‘ওয়াশফরআপ ফেইজ ২ প্রকল্প’ শীর্ষক প্রকল্পটি দেশের নির্দিষ্ট কিছু শহরাঞ্চলের পরিবেশের সামগ্রিক অবস্থা ও এর টেকসই-সক্ষমতার উন্নয়নের লক্ষ্যে কাজ করবে। রাজধানীর গুলশান ২-এ অবস্থিত সুইডেন দূতাবাসে এই প্রকল্পের চুক্তি স্বাক্ষরিত হয়।
অনুষ্ঠানে সুইডেন দূতাবাসের পক্ষে চুক্তিতে স্বাক্ষর করেন এর হেড অব ডেভেলপমেন্ট কো-অপারেশন ও ডেপুটি হেড অব মিশন, মারিয়া স্ট্রিডসম্যান এবং ওয়াটারএইড বাংলাদেশের পক্ষে চুক্তিতে স্বাক্ষর করেন সংস্থাটির কান্ট্রি ডিরেক্টর হাসিন জাহান।
তিন বছর মেয়াদী এ প্রকল্পটি বিগত বছরগুলোয় ব্যবহৃত সর্বোত্তম অনুশীলনীগুলোকে প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক রূপ দেয়ার লক্ষ্যে কাজ করবে। প্রকল্পটি ঢাকা, চট্টগ্রাম, খুলনা, পাইকগাছা, সখিপুর ও সৈয়দপুরে বাস্তবায়িত হবে। প্রকল্পটির লক্ষ্য হল সমাজে পানি, স্যানিটেশন ও স্বাস্থ্যবিধি (ওয়াশ) সচেতনতা বৃদ্ধি করা এবং জলবায়ু-সহনশীল এবং ওয়াশ কার্যক্রমে সকলের সুযোগ বৃদ্ধির মাধ্যমে নির্দিষ্ট সম্প্রদায়ের সংশ্লিষ্ট সমস্যা লাঘব করা।
প্রকল্পটি ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ পরিস্থিতিতে বসবাসকারী মানুষ, বিশেষত নারীদের জীবনে উল্লেখযোগ্য প্রভাব ফেলবে। নারীদের প্রায়শই দীর্ঘ সময়ের জন্য পানি বোঝাই পাত্র বহন করতে হয়, যা তাদের স্বাস্থ্যের ওপর নেতিবাচক প্রভাব ফেলে। এ প্রকল্পের লক্ষ্য হল সবাই, বিশেষ করে যারা সবচেয়ে ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ অবস্থায় বসবাস করছেন, তাদের প্রয়োজনে জরুরি সেবা প্রাপ্তি নিশ্চিতে ভূমিকা রাখা।
সেই সাথে, প্রকল্পটি পথচারী ও নগরবাসীর সুবিধাতেও উল্লেখযোগ্য প্রভাব ফেলবে। এর মাধ্যমে ৯৫ লাখ পাবলিক-পয়ঃনিষ্কাশন সুবিধা ব্যবহারকারী এবং ১৮ হাজার বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনা কর্মী, সংশ্লিষ্ট সম্প্রদায়ের মানুষ এবং তাদের পরিবারের সদস্যগণ উন্নত স্বাস্থ্য পরিষেবার সুযোগ পাবেন। পাশপাশি, ১৫ হাজার মানুষ এর ফিকাল স্লাজ ট্রিটমেন্ট প্ল্যান্ট (এফএসটিপি)-র মাধ্যমে নিরাপদে পরিচালিত স্যানিটেশন পরিষেবা পাবেন, এবং ৪ হাজার পরিবার সরাসরি কঠিন বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনা সহায়তা পাবেন।
এ প্রসঙ্গে ওয়াটারএইডের কান্ট্রি ডিরেক্টর, হাসিন জাহান বলেন, “বাংলাদেশে ওয়াশফরআপ প্রকল্পের দ্বিতীয় পর্যায়ের জন্য সুইডেন দূতাবাসের সাথে আমাদের যৌথ প্রচেষ্টাকে আরো একধাপ এগিয়ে নিতে পেরে আমরা আনন্দিত। বিভিন্ন সামাজিক সম্প্রদায়ের জন্য উন্নত পানি, স্যানিটেশন ও স্বাস্থ্যবিধি (ওয়াশ) সুবিধা নিশ্চিত করা এবং এ প্রসঙ্গে সচেতনতা গঠনের লক্ষ্যে আমাদের প্রচেষ্টা সমূহের উল্লেখযোগ্য প্রভাব ইতোমধ্যেই পরিলক্ষিত হচ্ছে, এবং দেশের মানুষের জীবনযাত্রাকে আরও উন্নত করতে এই অগ্রগতি অব্যাহত রাখতে আমরা প্রতিশ্রুতিবদ্ধ রয়েছি”।
বাংলাদেশে সুইডেন দূতাবাসের হেড অব ডেভেলপমেন্ট কো-অপারেশন ও ডেপুটি হেড অব মিশন মারিয়া স্ট্রিডসম্যান বলেন, “আমরা জানতে পেরে সন্তুষ্ট যে, ওয়াশফরআপ প্রকল্পের এই দ্বিতীয় ধাপ বাংলাদেশে প্রান্তিক জনগণের চাহিদাকে অগ্রাধিকার দেওয়া অব্যাহত রাখবে। এটি সে সকল নারীদের দূর্ভোগকে লাঘব করবে, যারা বছরের পর বছর ধরে দূর থেকে নিরাপদ পানি বয়ে আনার পরিশ্রমসাধ্য কাজটি করে চলেছেন। পানি, স্যানিটেশন এবং স্বাস্থ্যব্যবস্থার নিরাপত্তা বস্তুত মৌলিক মানবাধিকার, আর আমাদের প্রকল্পের মুখ্য উদ্দেশ্য হল প্রত্যেকে – বিশেষ করে সামাজিকভাবে ঝুঁকির মধ্যে থাকা সম্প্রদায়ের সদস্যরা – উল্লেখিত অতিপ্রয়োজনীয় এই পরিষেবাগুলি পাচ্ছেন কি না, তা নিশ্চিত করা”।
ওয়াশফরআপ ফেইজ টু প্রকল্পের মাধ্যমে ওয়াটারএইড বাংলাদেশ এবং বাংলাদেশে সুইডেন দূতাবাস শহরাঞ্চলের বিভিন্ন বস্তি এবং নিম্ন আয়ের জনবসতি অঞ্চলের পানি, স্যানিটেশন ও স্বাস্থ্যবিধি (ওয়াশ)-সুবিধা বঞ্চিত মানুষদের পরিবেশগত অবস্থা এবং সহনশীল ভাবে থাকার সক্ষমতা উন্নত করার লক্ষ্যে নিজ প্রতিশ্রুতির উপর জোর দেয়। প্রকল্পের আওতাধীন মানুষেরা বর্ধিত ওয়াশ সচেতনতা এবং জলবায়ু সহনশীল এবং অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক ওয়াশ সুবিধা থেকে উপকৃত হবেন বলে আশা করা যায়।
WaterAid’s steady partnership with Embassy of Sweden
Second phase of WASH4UP in motion, to benefit thousands of people
[Dhaka, May 07, 2023] WaterAid Bangladesh, in partnership with the Embassy of Sweden in Bangladesh, has launched the second phase of their “WASH for Urban Poor (WASH4UP) project” called WASH4UP Phase II project, aiming at improving the environmental health and resilience of certain urban regions in Bangladesh. The project agreement was signed on May 03, 2023, at the Embassy of Sweden located in Gulshan 2, Dhaka.
Maria Stridsman, Head of Development Cooperation and Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Sweden in Dhaka, and Hasin Jahan, WaterAid’s Country Director in Bangladesh, signed the agreement on behalf of the respective organizations.
The three-year project will be implemented in Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, Paikgacha, Sakhipur, and Saidpur, and will focus on institutionalizing best practices already established in previous years. The project aims to reduce WASH deprivation among the target communities through increased WASH awareness and access to climate-resilient and inclusive WASH.
The project will have a significant impact on the lives of people living in vulnerable condition, especially women. Women often bear the burden of fetching water for extended periods, which affects their health and well-being. The project aims to ensure that all people, especially the most vulnerable, have equitable access to essential services.
The WASH4UP-Phase II project will benefit 50,000 people who will have access to safe water at communities and institutions, and 46,000 people who will have access to improved sanitation facilities at communities and institutions. Additionally, 90,000 people will receive motivation to change their hygiene behavior at communities and institutions.
Furthermore, the project will have a significant impact on commuters, with 9,500,000 users of public sanitation facilities, and 18,000 sanitation and waste workers, community people, and their family members will have access to better health services. Additionally, 15,000 people will receive safely managed sanitation services through fecal sludge treatment plant (FSTP), and 16,500 people will receive door-to-door solid waste management support.
Speaking about the project, Hasin Jahan, WaterAid’s Country Director, said, “We are delighted to extend our collaborative efforts with the Embassy of Sweden for the second phase of the WASH4UP project in Bangladesh. Our efforts to improve WASH facilities and community awareness have already shown significant impact, and we are committed to building on this progress to further improve the lives of people in Bangladesh”.

WaterAid Bangladesh and the Embassy of Sweden in Bangladesh’s WASH4UP Phase II project underscores their commitment to improving the environmental health and resilience of WASH-deprived urban poor living in slums and low-income settlements, and the beneficiaries of the project will undoubtedly benefit from the increased WASH awareness and access to climate resilient and inclusive WASH.
