Freedom and friendship shine as Bangladesh celebrates Independence and National Day in Canada

Ottawa | April 4, 2025 – Freedom and friendship shone in Canada as the Bangladesh High Commission in Canada celebrated our Independence and National Day 2025 today in Ottawa with national pride and diplomatic warmth. The event was attended by ambassadors, members of the diplomatic corps, Canadian government officials, politicians, academicians, businesspersons, media personalities and members of the Bangladeshi Diaspora. It reflected both the pride of a sovereign nation and the growing strength of Bangladesh–Canada bilateral relations.

Hosted by High Commissioner Nahida Sobhan, the evening honoured Bangladesh’s cultural heritage, youth aspirations, and the resilient spirit of its people in shaping a progressive and inclusive nation. It also highlighted the expanding bilateral partnership—anchored in shared values, development cooperation, and mutual commitment to a just, inclusive, and sustainable world.

An exhibition of Bangladeshi products and handicrafts—such as traditional nakshi kantha, jamdani sarees, jute goods, spices and jewelry—added a vibrant cultural dimension to the celebration, showcasing the country’s rich artisanal legacy and export potential.

High Commissioner Nahida Sobhan, in her speech, paid profound tribute to the martyrs of the 1971 Independence War and to those who lost their lives during the 2024 July Uprising. She spoke of Bangladesh’s transformation . She also highlighted Bangladesh’s global leadership in sectors such as ready-made garments, agriculture, disaster response, women’s empowerment and peacekeeping. The High Commissioner emphasized that Canada remains a key and trusted partner of Bangladesh, particularly in trade and investment, education, and development assistance.

The evening concluded on a note of unity and reflection, celebrating not only the diplomatic ties between the two nations, but also the enduring spirit of independence that continues to guide Bangladesh’s place on the world stage.
