Growth and prosperity of South Asia will be driven by Bangladesh and India – says U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Ambassador Kelly Keiderling
Washington D.C., 06 December 2021: The U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Ambassador Kelly Keiderling has said that her country greatly values its partnerships with Bangladesh and India and the two countries will largely drive future growth and prosperity of the South Asia region. She made these remarks as the U.S. Government representative at a Reception, organized by the Embassy of Bangladesh jointly with the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the ‘Maitri Dibosh (Friendship Day)’ on 06 December 2021. Ambassador Keiderling also said that the United States observes the abiding friendship between Bangladesh and India and that has remained as a source of strength and stability in the region in the changing geopolitical scenario.
The Reception was organized as a part of the joint commemoration of the historic ‘Maitri Dibosh’ in 18 foreign capitals, as agreed by the Governments of Bangladesh and India. The program was attended by a number of high-ranking U.S. officials including the Senior Director of the White House National Security Council Ms. Sumona Guha, Director General (nominee) of U.S. Foreign Service Ambassador Marcia Bernicat and President of the US-Bangladesh Business Council as well as US-India Business Council Ms. Nisha Biswal, among others. Invited guests from the U.S. government and chambers, diplomats, representatives of business houses and think tanks, members of Bangladeshi and Indian diaspora in the U.S. and officials from both the Embassies also attended the event.
The ceremonial part of the Reception began with the observance of ‘one minute silence’ to honor the martyrs of Bangladesh and India in the War of Liberation. In his welcome remarks, Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States M. Shahidul Islam paid deep tribute to the memory of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for his unwavering leadership to unite and mobilize the entire nation in their fight for independence. He also remembered with great respect the 3 million martyrs of Bangladesh’s war of liberation and numerous Indian soldiers who fought side by side and gave their lives. The Ambassador recalled the great support extended by India during Bangladesh’s independence war and stated that the relations between the two countries have deepened, matured, and expanded in many areas of cooperation over the years. Ambassador Islam also highlighted the tremendous socio-economic transformation that Bangladesh has experienced in the recent years under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He hoped that Bangladesh and India together with the U.S. would continue to work together in a spirt of mutual support and cooperation to ensure for a prosperous South Asia
Indian Ambassador to the United States Mr. Taranjit Singh Sandhu, in a video message, said that India and Bangladesh today share comprehensive ties that has its origin in the deep-rooted friendship between the two countries since the war of liberation. He recalled the ‘inspiring leadership’ of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his relentless efforts in the emergence of an independent Bangladesh. Ambassador Sandhu stated that friendship between Bangladesh and India keeps growing stronger, as many long-standing matters between the two countries have been resolved amicably. He underscored the importance of both the countries working together to address the common challenges like terrorism and COVID-19 pandemic to ensure peace and security in the region.
The Reception was followed by cultural performances both by Bangladeshi and Indian performers. A documentary on the 50 years of Bangladesh-India relations was also screened at the event. The invited guests were served traditional Bangladeshi and Indian cuisines at the end of the program.

ওয়াশিংটন ডিসি, ০৬ ডিসেম্বর ২০২১: মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ডেপুটি অ্যাসিস্ট্যান্ট সেক্রেটারি অফ স্টেট অ্যাম্বাসেডর কেলি কেইডারলিং বলেছেন যে তার দেশ বাংলাদেশ ও ভারতের সাথে অংশীদারিত্বকে অত্যন্ত মূল্যায়ন করে এবং দুটি দেশই মূলত দক্ষিণ এশিয়া অঞ্চলের ভবিষ্যৎ প্রবৃদ্ধি ও সমৃদ্ধি চালাবে। তিনি ০৬ ডিসেম্বর ২০২১ তারিখে ‘মৈত্রী দিবস (বন্ধুত্ব দিবস)’ উদযাপনের জন্য ওয়াশিংটন, ডিসিতে বাংলাদেশ দূতাবাসের সাথে যৌথভাবে বাংলাদেশ দূতাবাস আয়োজিত একটি সংবর্ধনা অনুষ্ঠানে মার্কিন সরকারের প্রতিনিধি হিসাবে এই মন্তব্য করেন। রাষ্ট্রদূত কেইডারলিং আরও বলেন যে মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্র বাংলাদেশ ও ভারতের মধ্যে স্থায়ী বন্ধুত্ব পর্যবেক্ষণ করে এবং পরিবর্তনশীল ভূ-রাজনৈতিক পরিস্থিতিতে এই অঞ্চলে শক্তি ও স্থিতিশীলতার উৎস হিসেবে রয়ে গেছে।
বাংলাদেশ ও ভারত সরকারের সম্মতি অনুসারে ১৮টি বিদেশী রাজধানীতে ঐতিহাসিক ‘মৈত্রী দিবস’-এর যৌথ স্মরণের অংশ হিসেবে সংবর্ধনার আয়োজন করা হয়। অনুষ্ঠানে হোয়াইট হাউসের ন্যাশনাল সিকিউরিটি কাউন্সিলের সিনিয়র ডিরেক্টর মিস সুমনা গুহ, ইউএস ফরেন সার্ভিস অ্যাম্বাসেডরের ডিরেক্টর জেনারেল (মনোনীত) মার্সিয়া বার্নিকাট এবং ইউএস-বাংলাদেশ বিজনেস কাউন্সিলের প্রেসিডেন্টসহ বেশ কয়েকজন উচ্চপদস্থ মার্কিন কর্মকর্তা উপস্থিত ছিলেন। পাশাপাশি মার্কিন-ভারত বিজনেস কাউন্সিল মিসেস নিশা বিসওয়ালসহ অন্যান্যরা উপস্থিত ছিলেন। মার্কিন সরকার ও চেম্বার থেকে আমন্ত্রিত অতিথি, কূটনীতিক, ব্যবসা প্রতিষ্ঠান ও থিঙ্ক ট্যাঙ্কের প্রতিনিধি, মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে বাংলাদেশি ও ভারতীয় প্রবাসী সদস্যরা এবং উভয় দূতাবাসের কর্মকর্তারাও অনুষ্ঠানে উপস্থিত ছিলেন।
মুক্তিযুদ্ধে বাংলাদেশ ও ভারতের শহীদদের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা জানিয়ে ‘এক মিনিট নীরবতা’ পালনের মধ্য দিয়ে সংবর্ধনার আনুষ্ঠানিকতা শুরু হয়। স্বাগত বক্তব্যে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের রাষ্ট্রদূত এম. সহিদুল ইসলাম স্বাধীনতার লড়াইয়ে সমগ্র জাতিকে ঐক্যবদ্ধ ও সংঘবদ্ধ করার জন্য তাঁর অটুট নেতৃত্বের জন্য জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের স্মৃতির প্রতি গভীর শ্রদ্ধা নিবেদন করেন। বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধের ত্রিশ লাখ শহীদ এবং অসংখ্য ভারতীয় সৈনিক যারা পাশাপাশি লড়াই করেছেন এবং জীবন দিয়েছেন তাদের তিনি গভীর শ্রদ্ধার সাথে স্মরণ করেন। রাষ্ট্রদূত বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধের সময় ভারত কর্তৃক প্রদত্ত মহান সমর্থনের কথা স্মরণ করেন এবং বলেন যে বিগত বছরগুলোতে সহযোগিতার অনেক ক্ষেত্রে দুই দেশের সম্পর্ক গভীর, পরিপক্ক এবং প্রসারিত হয়েছে। রাষ্ট্রদূত ইসলাম প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার দূরদর্শী নেতৃত্বে সাম্প্রতিক বছরগুলোতে বাংলাদেশ যে ব্যাপক আর্থ-সামাজিক পরিবর্তনের অভিজ্ঞতা অর্জন করেছে তাও তুলে ধরেন। তিনি আশা প্রকাশ করেন যে, সমৃদ্ধ দক্ষিণ এশিয়া নিশ্চিত করতে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সাথে বাংলাদেশ ও ভারত পারস্পরিক সমর্থন ও সহযোগিতার ধারায় একসাথে কাজ করে যাবে। মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে ভারতীয় রাষ্ট্রদূত তারাজিৎ সিং সান্ধু, একটি ভিডিও বার্তায় বলেছেন যে ভারত এবং বাংলাদেশ আজ ব্যাপক সম্পর্ক ভাগ করে যা মুক্তিযুদ্ধের পর থেকে দুই দেশের মধ্যে গভীর বন্ধুত্বের উৎস। তিনি বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের ‘অনুপ্রেরণাদায়ী নেতৃত্ব’ এবং স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশের অভ্যুদয়ে তাঁর নিরলস প্রচেষ্টার কথা স্মরণ করেন। রাষ্ট্রদূত সান্ধু বলেছেন যে বাংলাদেশ ও ভারতের মধ্যে বন্ধুত্ব আরও দৃঢ় হচ্ছে, কারণ দুই দেশের মধ্যে বহুদিন ধরে চলমান বিষয়গুলো সৌহার্দ্যপূর্ণভাবে সমাধান করা হয়েছে। তিনি এই অঞ্চলে শান্তি ও নিরাপত্তা নিশ্চিত করতে সন্ত্রাসবাদ এবং কোভিড-১৯ মহামারীর মতো অভিন্ন চ্যালেঞ্জ মোকাবেলায় উভয় দেশের একসঙ্গে কাজ করার গুরুত্ব তুলে ধরেন। সংবর্ধনা অনুষ্ঠানের পর ছিল বাংলাদেশি ও ভারতীয় শিল্পীদের সাংস্কৃতিক পরিবেশনা। অনুষ্ঠানে বাংলাদেশ-ভারত সম্পর্কের ৫০ বছরের ওপর একটি তথ্যচিত্র প্রদর্শন করা হয়। অনুষ্ঠানের শেষে আমন্ত্রিত অতিথিদের ঐতিহ্যবাহী বাংলাদেশি ও ভারতীয় খাবার পরিবেশন করা হয়।
