গত ১১ জুন ২০২৩ তারিখ কানাডার অটোয়াস্থ বাংলাদেশ হাইকমিশন ব্যাপক উৎসাহ ও উদ্দীপনার সাথে আড়ম্বরপূর্ণভাবে বাংলা নববর্ষ-১৪৩০ উদযাপন করে। বাংলাদেশ হাইকমিশনের মিলনায়তনে বেলা ৫.০০ ঘটিকায় অনুষ্ঠান শুরু হয়। মান্যবর হাইকমিশনার ড. খলিলুর রহমানের সভাপতিত্বে অনুষ্ঠিত উক্ত অনুষ্ঠানে কানাডার হাউজ অব কমন্স এর মাননীয় সংসদ সদস্য H.E. Chandra Arya MP, হাইকমিশনের কর্মকর্তা-কর্মচারিবৃন্দ এবং কানাডায় বসবাসরত বাংলাদেশি কমিউনিটির নেতৃস্থানীয় ব্যক্তিবর্গ অংশগ্রহণ করেন।
মান্যবর হাইকমিশনার ড. খলিলুর রহমান তাঁর শুভেচ্ছা বক্তব্যে বাঙালির অসাম্প্রদায়িক ঐতিহ্যের উপর আলোকপাত করেন। মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা সরকারের কূটনৈতিক প্রচ্ষ্টোয় UNESCO কর্তৃক পহেলা বৈশাখের মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা মানব জাতির বিমূর্ত সাংস্কৃতিক ঐতিহ্য হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি বাংলা নববর্ষ উদযাপনে নতুনমাত্রা যোগ করেছে বলে মান্যবর হাইকমিশনার মহোদয় উল্লেখ করেন। হাইকমিশনার আরো বলেন, বহুত্ববাদ এবং ধর্মনিরপেক্ষতাকে প্রচার করার মাধ্যমে মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা একটি আবহ গড়ে তুলতে অবদান রাখে যেখানে বিভিন্ন ধর্ম ও জাতি নির্বিশেষে সকলে সহাবস্থান করতে পারে বলে তিনি উল্লেখ করেন।
মান্যবর হাইকমিশনার তাঁর বক্তব্যে আরো বলেন, পহেলা বৈশাখ ধর্মীয় উগ্রবাদ ও ধর্মান্ধতার বিরুদ্ধে শক্তিশালী প্রতিষেধক হিসেবে কাজ করে। এই উৎসব আমাদের সমাজের বৈচিত্র্যকে আলিঙ্গন করে বিভক্তির উপর ঐক্য ও সহনশীলতার জয়ের সুস্পষ্ট বার্তা পাঠায়। এই উৎসব একটি অন্তর্ভুক্তির পরিবেশ গড়ে তুলতে সাহায্য করে যেখানে বিভিন্ন মতের মানুষ ঐতিহ্য উদযাপন করতে একত্রিত হয়। এটি পরস্পর সহমর্মিতা জাগায় যা ধর্মীয় উগ্রবাদের উত্থান রোধে অপরিহার্য।
মান্যবর হাইকমিশনার আরো বলেন, আমাদের যাত্রা সবসময় মসৃণ ছিল না। ১৯৭৫ সালে বঙ্গবন্ধুর নৃশংস হত্যাকাণ্ডের পর আমাদের স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধের মৌলিক নীতিগুলি ধূলিসাৎ করা হয়েছিল। আমরা ভাগ্যবান মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা ক্ষমতায় এসে জাতিকে মুক্তিযুদ্ধের আদর্শের পথে ফিরিয়ে এনেছেন। তাঁর আমলেই পহেলা বৈশাখের মতো সার্বজনীন উৎসবগুলি দেশে বিদেশে সকল সম্প্রদায়ের অংশগ্রহণে পালিত হচ্ছে।
স্বাগত বক্তব্যে শেষে হাইকমিশনার সকলকে নিয়ে ঐতিহ্যবাহী মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রায় অংশগ্রহণ করেন। অনুষ্ঠানের অতিথি কানাডার হাউস অব কমন্সের মাননীয় সংসদ সদস্য H.E. Chandra Arya মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার নেতৃত্বে বাংলাদেশের রাজনৈতিক স্থিতিশীলতার প্রশংসা করেন এবং এই স্থিতিশীলতা গত এক দশকে অভূতপূর্ব অর্থনৈতিক প্রবৃদ্ধিতে অবদান রেখেছে বলে উল্লেখ করেন। তিনি কানাডায় বাংলা সংস্কৃতি ও ঐতিহ্যের প্রচারে হাইকমিশনের প্রচেষ্টারও প্রশংসা করেন। তিনি বিশেষ করে কূটনৈতিক কার্যক্রম এবং বাংলাদেশের টেকসই অর্থনৈতিক প্রবৃদ্ধিতে অবদান রাখার জন্য নীতিনির্ধারকদের সঙ্গে হাইকমিশনারের নিয়মিত যোগাযোগ করার জন্য তাঁর ভূয়সী প্রশংসা করেন। তিনি কানাডার হাউজ অব কমন্স কর্তৃক সাম্প্রতিক পাশকৃত বিল সি-৪৭ এর পক্ষে হাইকমিশনারের ওকালতির কথা বিশেশভাবে উল্লেখ করেন। এই বিল আইনে পরিনত হলে বাংলাদেশসহ স্বল্পোন্নত দেশসমুহের জন্য বিশেষ ট্যারিফ সুবিধা ২০৩৪ সাল পর্যন্ত বর্ধিত হবে।
প্রখ্যাত বাংলাদেশী গায়ক তপন চৌধুরী অনুষ্ঠানে গান পরিবেশন করেন এবং বাংলাদেশী-কানাডিয়ান কমিউনিটির শিল্পী ও মিশনের কর্মকর্তাগণের অংশগ্রহণে একটি মনোজ্ঞ সাংস্কৃতিক পরিবেশনার আয়োজন করা হয়। এছাড়া, মিশনের পরিবারবর্গ কর্তৃক প্রস্তুতকৃত ঐতিহ্যবাহী বাংলাদেশী খাবার পরিবেশন করা হয়।
Celebration of Bengali New Year-1430 by Bangladesh High Commission in Ottawa, Canada
The Bangladesh High Commission in Canada celebrated Bengali New Year-1430 with great enthusiasm on 11 June 2023. The program commenced at 5:00 pm in the auditorium of the Bangladesh High Commission. The event was chaired by H.E., the High Commissioner Dr. Khalilur Rahman, and attended by Chandra Arya, Hon’ble Member of the House of Commons, as well as officials of the High Commission and prominent members of the Bangladeshi community living in Canada.
In his welcome speech, High Commissioner Dr. Khalilur Rahman emphasized the non-communal traditions of the Bengali culture. He highlighted the significance of UNESCO’s recognition of the Mongal Sovajatra (Mongal procession) as an intangible cultural heritage of mankind. This recognition, achieved through the diplomatic efforts led by Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has added a new dimension to the celebration of Bengali New Year. The Mongal Sovajatra, by promoting pluralism and secularism, contributes to an environment where people of different religions, races, and backgrounds can co-exist harmoniously.
The High Commissioner also said that Pahela Boishakh serves as a powerful antidote to religious extremism and bigotry. By embracing the diversity of our society, we send a clear message that unity and tolerance triumph over division. The festival fosters an inclusive environment where people of different faiths come together to celebrate our shared heritage. It promotes dialogue, understanding, and respect, which are essential in preventing the rise of religious extremism, the High Commissioner added.
The High Commissioner also emphasized that the journey of Bangladesh has not always been smooth. Following the brutal assassination of Bangabandhu in 1975, the basic principles of our freedom struggle were challenged. However, we are fortunate that the people of Bangladesh have elected Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has guided our nation back to the path of our values. Under her leadership, our journey of independence and development has progressed. It is during her tenure that festivals like Mongol processions and Pahela Boishakh are being celebrated abroad with enthusiasm and active participation from our diaspora community, said the High Commissioner.
Following the welcome speech, the High Commissioner invited the guests to participate in a symbolic Mongal Sovajatra (Mongal procession).
Honorable Chandra Arya, Member of the House of Commons of Canada, commended the political stability of Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which has contributed to the remarkable economic growth of the country over the past decade. He also praised the efforts of the High Commission in promoting Bangla culture and heritage in Canada. In particular, he acknowledged the High Commissioner for his outstanding diplomatic endeavors and regular engagement with policymakers, which have contributed to the sustained economic growth of Bangladesh. Honorable Arya highlighted the High Commissioner’s active involvement in advocating for the recently passed Bill C-47 by the House of Commons of Canada, extending the Least Developed Country Tariff (LDCT) and General Preferential Tariff (GPT) until December 2034.
Renowned Bangladeshi singer Tapan Chowdhury performed at the event, and there were cultural performances by Bangladeshi Canadian artists and officials of the Mission and their children. The event concluded with a feast to serve traditional Bangladeshi cuisine prepared by the Mission’s families.
