‘International Mother Language Day observed at the UN’
New York, 21 February 2024: International Mother Language Day (IMLD) 2024 has been celebrated at the UN headquarters today for the 8th consecutive year. The Permanent Missions of Bangladesh, Austria, Bahrain, Bolivia, Romania and South Africa to the United Nations jointly organized the event in partnership with the UN Secretariat and UNESCO. The President of the United Nations General Assembly Mr. Dennis Francis graced the event as the Chief guest.
This year’s IMLD event featured a rich and multilingual discussion followed by cultural performances. The President of the General Assembly, the Permanent Representatives / Ambassadors of Bahrain, Bolivia, Romania, South Africa, Austria, India, Hungary, Papua New Guinea and Tanzania, senior representatives of the UN and UNESCO and a representative of civil society participated in the discussion on the theme of this year’s IMLD, – “Multilingual education is a pillar of intergenerational learning”. In addition to the six official languages, interpretation was provided in Bangla, Hindi and Romanian language. The cultural segment included presentation of theme song – ‘amar bhai-er rokte rangano ekushe February’, instrumental and vocal music by UN Chamber Music Society and diaspora based cultural groups and Bangla songs. The event was telecast live on the United Nations Web TV.
In his welcome remarks, the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith paid deep homage to the language martyrs for upholding the sanctity of Bangla in 1952, and to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for leading the language movement and the subsequent national movements culminating to our liberation in 1971. He recalled with gratitude the crucial role of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in securing UNESCO’s recognition of 21st February as the international mother language day at the initiative of expatriate Bangladeshis. He also highlighted the importance of mother tongue-based education for ensuring quality and inclusive education to the children. He also reiterated the call of Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to make Bangla an official language of the United Nations.
The President of the General Assembly and all other speakers acknowledged with deep appreciation, the leadership role of Bangladesh in celebrating the International Mother Language Day in the United Nations Headquarters. They thanked Bangladesh for its pioneering role in getting proclamation of a day dedicated to mother language. They also recognized the importance of mother tongue-based multilingual education as the foundation for continued learning and development. Chair of the NGO Committee on Language and Languages also spoke at the event as a civil society representative.
The event was attended by a significant numbers Ambassadors, diplomats from different countries, high officials from the UN Secretariat, civil society and Bangladeshi community representatives.
Earlier in the morning the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh observed the Martyrs Day and the International Mother Language Day with due solemnity in the Mission’s premises. The Permanent Representative and the mission officials laid floral wreath in the Shaheed Minar established in the mission. During the event the messages of the President, Prime Minister, and Foreign Minister were read-out by the Mission officials.

নিউইয়র্ক, ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারি ২০২৪: আজ জাতিসংঘ সদর দপ্তরে টানা ৮ম বারের মত যথাযোগ্য মর্যাদায় আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস উদ্যাপন করা হয়। জাতিসংঘে বাংলাদেশ, অস্ট্রিয়া, বাহরাইন, বলিভিয়া রোমানিয়া ও দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকার স্থায়ী মিশনসমূহ, জাতিসংঘ সদর দপ্তর ও ইউনেস্কো এর সাথে যৌথ অংশীদারিত্বে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস উদ্যাপন অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করে। এতে প্রধান অতিথি হিসেবে অংশগ্রহণ করেন জাতিসংঘ সাধারণ পরিষদের সভাপতি জনাব ডেনিস ফ্রান্সিস (Dennis Francis)।
এই বছরের আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের অনুষ্ঠানটিতে বহু ভাষার ব্যবহারে সমৃদ্ধ আলোচনা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। আলোচনার পর মনোজ্ঞ সাংস্কৃতিক পরিবেশনার আয়োজন করা হয়। জাতিসংঘ সাধারণ পরিষদের সভাপতি, বাহরাইন, বলিভিয়া, রোমানিয়া, দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকা, অস্ট্রিয়া, ভারত, হাঙ্গেরি, পাপুয়া নিউগিনি এবং তানজানিয়ার স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি/রাষ্ট্রদূতগণ, জাতিসংঘ ও ইউনেস্কো-এর উচ্চ পর্যায়ের প্রতিনিধিবৃন্দ এবং সুশীল সমাজের একজন প্রতিনিধি আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস, ২০২৪ এর মূল প্রতিপাদ্য- “বহু ভাষার মাধ্যমে শিক্ষা; প্রজন্ম থেকে প্রজন্মে জ্ঞান চর্চার স্তম্ভ”- এর উপর আলোচনায় অংশগ্রহণ করেন। এই অনুষ্ঠানে জাতিসংঘের ছয়টি দাপ্তরিক ভাষার পাশাপাশি বাংলা, হিন্দি ও রোমানিয়ান ভাষায় প্রদত্ত বক্তব্য ভাষান্তর করা হয়। সাংস্কৃতিক পরিবেশনায় উদ্বোধনী সঙ্গীত “আমার ভাই এর রক্তে রাঙ্গানো একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারি”, জাতিসংঘ চেম্বার মিউজিক সোসাইটি কর্তৃক পরিবেশিত যন্ত্রসংগীত এবং অভিবাসীদের বিভিন্ন সাংস্কৃতিক সংগঠনের শিল্পীবৃন্দের পরিবেশিত গান অন্তর্ভুক্ত ছিল। অনুষ্ঠানটি জাতিসংঘের ওয়েব টিভিতে সরাসরি সম্প্রচার করা হয়।
উদ্বোধনী বক্তব্যে জাতিসংঘে নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধি রাষ্ট্রদূত মোহাম্মদ আব্দুল মুহিত ১৯৫২ সালের একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারির ভাষা শহীদগণ এবং ভাষা আন্দোলনের পথিকৃত জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানকে গভীর শ্রদ্ধার সাথে স্মরণ করেন। তিনি বলেন, ভাষা আন্দোলনের পথ ধরেই জাতির পিতার নেতৃত্বে শুরু হয় বাঙালি জাতির মুক্তিসংগ্রাম, যার চূড়ান্ত পরিণতি পায় ১৯৭১ সালের মুক্তিযুদ্ধে আমাদের বিজয়ের মাধ্যমে। মহান একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারিকে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি লাভের জন্য প্রবাসী কয়েকজন বাংলাদেশীর উদ্যোগকে রাষ্ট্রীয় উদ্যোগের মাধ্যমে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের পূর্ণ স্বীকৃতি আদায়ে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার দূরদর্শী নেতৃত্বের কথা স্মরণ করেন রাষ্ট্রদূত মুহিত। তিনি শিশুদের জন্য অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক ও মানসম্মত শিক্ষা নিশ্চিত করতে মাতৃভাষা ভিত্তিক পাঠদানের গুরুত্ব তুলে ধরেন। রাষ্ট্রদূত মুহিত, প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা কর্তৃক বাংলাকে জাতিসংঘের দাপ্তরিক ভাষা হিসেবে অন্তর্ভুক্ত করার প্রস্তাবটি পুনর্ব্যক্ত করেন।
জাতিসংঘ সাধারণ পরিষদের সভাপতি ও অন্যান্য বক্তাগণ জাতিসংঘ সদর দপ্তরে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস উদযাপনে বাংলাদেশের নেতৃত্বস্থানীয় ভূমিকার প্রশংসা করেন। মাতৃভাষার জন্য বিশেষ একটি দিন নির্ধারণে অগ্রণী ভূমিকা পালনের জন্য তাঁরা বাংলাদেশকে ধন্যবাদ জানান। মাতৃভাষাভিত্তিক বহুভাষায় শিক্ষা প্রদানকে জ্ঞানার্জন ও মেধা বিকাশের অন্যতম ভিত্তি হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করে, তাঁরা এর উপর গুরুত্বারোপ করেন। আলোচনা অনুষ্ঠানে ভাষা ও ভাষা বিষয়ক এনজিও কমিটির সভাপতি সুশীল সমাজের প্রতিনিধি হিসেবে বক্তব্য প্রদান করেন। এছাড়াও অনুষ্ঠানে জাতিসংঘে নিযুক্ত বিভিন্ন দেশের রাষ্ট্রদূতগণ, কূটনীতিকগণ, জাতিসংঘ সচিবালয়ের উচ্চপদস্থ কর্মকর্তাবৃন্দ, সুশীল সমাজের প্রতিনিধিবৃন্দ এবং যুক্তরাষ্ট্রস্থ বাংলাদেশী কমিউনিটির নেতৃবৃন্দ অংশগ্রহণ করেন।
জাতিসংঘ সদর দপ্তরে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস উদ্যাপন অনুষ্ঠানের পূর্বে সকালে যথাযোগ্য মর্যাদায় জাতিসংঘে বাংলাদেশ স্থায়ী মিশনে মহান শহীদ দিবস ও আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস উদ্যাপনের আয়োজন করা হয়। মান্যবর রাষ্ট্রদূত ও স্থায়ী প্রতিনিধির নেতৃত্বে মিশনের কর্মকর্তা-কর্মচারীগণ মিশনে স্থাপিত অস্থায়ী শহীদ মিনারে পুস্পস্তবক অর্পণ করেন। অনুষ্ঠানটিতে রাষ্ট্রপতি, প্রধানমন্ত্রী, ও পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী কর্তৃক প্রদত্ত বাণী পাঠ করা হয়। এছাড়াও জাতির পিতা বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান ও তাঁর পরিবারের শহীদ সদস্যবৃন্দ এবং মহান একুশের ভাষা শহীদদের আত্মার মাগফেরাত কামনা করে বিশেষ মোনাজাত পরিচালনা করা হয়।
