Two persons were killed and 90 people were injured by accident

Two persons were tragically killed and 90 people were injured in a colossal pileup of tragic accidents on Montreal’s South Shore on Wednesday, the 19th February 2020. The two persons who died were in the same vehicle, police said. Local health officials say that out of the 90 injuries in the colossal pileup, 60 were minor injuries and 30 were more serious injuries. Police have yet to release more details about the victims. There was the news of 69 injuries before by CBC news.

Highway 15 has been closed in both directions near kilometre 46 in the suburban city of La Prairie since the collisions occurred in the southbound lane at about 12:30 p.m. ET in the afternoon on Wednesday. A 10-kilometre stretch of the highway is expected remain closed until Thursday morning. Provincial police said the wreckage of accidents spanned about one kilometre, bringing some 200 vehicles to a screeching halt on Highway 15 as blinding snow blew from the shores of the St. Lawrence River onto Highway 15 by making limited visibility that caused the colossal pileup of accidents. Authorities estimate more than 100 cars were damaged, along with about a dozen trucks. A school bus was at the front of the colossal pileup, pressed against a damaged tank truck, but police said nobody on board in the school bus was injured.

Danielle McCann, the province’s health minister, said three hospitals in the area initiated a Code Orange — a hospital-wide warning that was circulated in order to alert staff that multiple casualties are on the way. Firefighters had to extricate victims from at least nine vehicles. Police say about 150 people in all were tended to at the scene. Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Sgt. Claude Denis said those who were not hurt were taken to a local community centre by chartered buses. The chain reaction of collisions was likely caused by a sudden whiteout, as blowing snow severely limited visibility in the area, said Quebec’s Transport Minister François Bonnardel.
